Sequence analysis of the viral genomes of imported and autochthonous isolates indicated new features for the potential emergence and spread of the chikungunya virus in Europe.Abstract:
In September 2010, autochthonous transmission of chikungunya virus was recorded in southeastern France, where the Aedes albopictus mosquito vector is present. Sequence analysis of the viral genomes of imported and autochthonous isolates indicated new features for the potential emergence and spread of the virus in Europe.read more

Seasonal Synchronization of Diapause Phases in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).
TL;DR: Analysis of the seasonal pattern of egg laying activity of a French Mediterranean population of the Asian tiger mosquito was monitored weekly for 2 years with ovitraps finds that both years the diapause initiates before the rapid decrease of the environmental temperature leaves a sufficient period of time to the complete development of one generation of A. albopictus with effective induction of diAPause in the laid eggs.

TL;DR: Using microsatellites, it is found that the demographic history influences the competence for the virus and is an important feature to assess the risk of outbreaks in new areas.

Extended Preclinical Safety, Efficacy and Stability Testing of a Live-attenuated Chikungunya Vaccine Candidate
TL;DR: Compared to wild-type CHIK virus, both vaccines generated lower viral loads in a wide variety of tissues and organs, including the brain and leg muscle, but CHIKV/IRES exhibited marked restrictions in dissemination and viral loads compared to 181/clone25, and was never found outside the blood, spleen and muscle.

Pharmacological validation of an inward-rectifier potassium (Kir) channel as an insecticide target in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti
TL;DR: Pharmacological validation of a specific mosquito Kir channel (AeKir1) in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti is provided, showing that VU590, a small-molecule inhibitor of mammalian Kir1.1 and Kir7.1 channels, potently inhibits AeK Kir1 but not another mosquito Kir channels (AoKir2B) in vitro.

The Methyltransferase-Like Domain of Chikungunya Virus nsP2 Inhibits the Interferon Response by Promoting the Nuclear Export of STAT1.

TL;DR: Where in the JAK/STAT signaling cascade the IFN response is inhibited and which protein domain of nsP2 is responsible for IFN inhibition is specified, illuminating new aspects of antiviral defense and CHIKV counterdefense strategies and will direct the search for novel antiviral compounds.

TL;DR: In this article, an outbreak of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was reported in Italy, where the primary source of infection and modes of transmission were identified and an active surveillance system was also implemented.

A single mutation in chikungunya virus affects vector specificity and epidemic potential.
TL;DR: The observation that a single amino acid substitution can influence vector specificity provides a plausible explanation of how this mutant virus caused an epidemic in a region lacking the typical vector, and has important implications with respect to how viruses may establish a transmission cycle when introduced into a new area.

Present and future arboviral threats.
TL;DR: Viruses such as dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) that have lost the requirement for enzootic amplification now produce extensive epidemics in tropical urban centers, and climate warming could facilitate the expansion of the distributions of many arboviruses.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the chikungunya virus outbreak was initiated by a strain related to East-African isolates, from which viral variants have evolved following a traceable microevolution history and may be due to adaptation to the mosquito vector.
