Cloning and tissue distribution of the human 1 lβ-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 enzyme

TLDR
The 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11βHSD) as mentioned in this paper was found to protect the nonselective mineralocorticoid receptor from occupation by glucocorticity, and to modulate access of glucoc Corticoid to glucoc corticoid receptors resulting in protection of the fetus and gonads.

11β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Enzymes Modulate Effects of Glucocorticoids in Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovial Cells

TL;DR: It is concluded that due to complex feedback mechanisms inherent to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, currently available transgenic animal models cannot display the full potential otherwise inherent in the techniques and might limit therapeutic use of glucocorticoids in RA.
Journal ArticleDOI

High dietary potassium chloride intake augments rat renal mineralocorticoid receptor selectivity via 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase

TL;DR: The results suggest that upon dietary KCl loading distal tubular mineralocorticoid receptor selectivity for aldosterone is increased because of enhanced corticosterone 11beta-oxidation, which may contribute to the fine-tuning of salt-water homeostasis by the kidney.

Ligand-receptor Interaction between Triterpenoids and the 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11βHSD2) Enzyme Predicts Their Toxic Effects against Tumorigenic r/m HM-SFME-1 Cells

TL;DR: It is suggested that analysis of the ligand-receptor interaction between triterpenoids and 11βHSD2 can be utilized to predict their antitumor effects and that GA can be used as a possible chemopreventive and therapeutic antitumors agent.

Arginine vasopressin stimulates 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 expression in the mineralocorticosteroid target cells

TL;DR: It is shown that HSD11B2 expression in human renal epithelial P58 cells is regulated at the mRNA and protein level, and that protein kinases A (PKA) and C (PKC) are involved in this process.

Effects of Hypoxemia on 11β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Types 1 and 2 Gene Expression in Preterm Fetal Sheep

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of sustained hypoxia on the expression of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD) type 1 and 2 genes in preterm fetal sheep was examined.

Mineralocorticoid action: target tissue specificity is enzyme, not receptor, mediated

TL;DR: The presence of the enzyme 11 beta-hydroxy-steroid dehydrogenase, which converts cortisol and corticosterone, but not aldosterone, to their 11-keto analogs, means that these analogs cannot bind to mineralocorticoid receptors.

LOCALISATION OF 11β-HYDROXYSTEROID DEHYDROGENASE—TISSUE SPECIFIC PROTECTOR OF THE MINERALOCORTICOID RECEPTOR

TL;DR: Findings seem to explain why sodium retention, hypokalaemia, and hypertension develop in subjects with congenital deficiency of 11 beta-OHSD and those in whom the enzyme has been inhibited by liquorice.

A workbench for multiple alignment construction and analysis.

TL;DR: An interactive program, MACAW (Multiple Alignment Construction and Analysis Workbench), that allows the user to construct multiple alignments by locating, analyzing, editing, and combining “blocks” of aligned sequence segments.

Mineralocorticoid activity of liquorice: 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency comes of age

TL;DR: It is suggested that in both conditions there is a defect in the renal conversion of cortisol to cortisone by 11 beta-OHSD which results in high intrarenal cortisol levels, acting on type 1 mineralocorticoid receptors to cause sodium retention.
