This Review describes the current knowledge of how geminiviruses interact with their plant hosts and the functional consequences of these interactions.
Abstract
The family Geminiviridae is one of the largest and most important families of plant viruses. The small, single-stranded DNA genomes of geminiviruses encode 5-7 proteins that redirect host machineries and processes to establish a productive infection. These interactions reprogramme plant cell cycle and transcriptional controls, inhibit cell death pathways, interfere with cell signalling and protein turnover, and suppress defence pathways. This Review describes our current knowledge of how geminiviruses interact with their plant hosts and the functional consequences of these interactions.

A virus-encoded protein suppresses methylation of the viral genome in the Cajal body through its interaction with AGO4

TL;DR: This work shows that the anti-viral methylation of the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) genome occurs specifically in the Cajal body of Nicotiana benthamiana cells, drawing a long sought-after functional connection between RdDM, the Cjal body, and anti-Viral DNA methylation.

Compatibility and interaction of begomoviruses and DNA-satellites causing leaf curl disease in Asia, Africa and Mediterranean Region

TL;DR: It is confirmed that geographically diverseBegomoviruses can functionally interact with non-cognate DNA-satellites, which may cause the emergence of new begomovirus-satellite complexes.

SnRK1: a versatile plant protein kinase that limits geminivirus infection.

TL;DR: Data suggest that SnRK1 is involved in the co-evolution of plant hosts and geminiviruses.

Stability of Begomoviral pathogenicity determinant βC1 is modulated by mutually antagonistic SUMOylation and SIM interactions

TL;DR: The results indicate the presence of a novel mechanism mediating a fine balance between defence and counter-defence in which a SIM site is competitively sought for degradation and, as a counter-Defence, βC1 undergoes SUMOylation to escape from its degradation.

KU80, a key factor for non-homologous end-joining, retards geminivirus multiplication

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the speed of a systemic infection with a plant DNA geminivirus in Arabidopsis thaliana is KU80-dependent, and the early emergence of Euphorbia yellow mosaic virus DNA was significantly increased in ku80 knockout mutants compared with wild-type sibling controls.

Top 10 plant viruses in molecular plant pathology

TL;DR: A short review on each virus of the Top 10 list and its importance is presented, with the intent of initiating discussion and debate amongst the plant virology community, as well as laying down a benchmark, as it will be interesting to see in future years how perceptions change and which viruses enter and leave the Top10.

Emerging Virus Diseases Transmitted by Whiteflies

TL;DR: Factors driving the emergence and establishment of whitefly-transmitted diseases include genetic changes in the virus through mutation and recombination, changes inThe vector populations coupled with polyphagy of the main vector, Bemisia tabaci, and long distance traffic of plant material or vector insects due to trade of vegetables and ornamental plants.

Exploiting chinks in the plant's armor: evolution and emergence of geminiviruses

TL;DR: The geminiviruses represent a family of DNA viruses that has circumvented these impediments to emerge as one of the most successful viral pathogens, causing severe economic losses to agricultural production worldwide.

Global analysis of Arabidopsis gene expression uncovers a complex array of changes impacting pathogen response and cell cycle during geminivirus infection

TL;DR: Geminiviruses modulate plant cell cycle status by differentially impacting the CYCD/retinoblastoma-related protein/E2F regulatory network and facilitating progression into the endocycle.
