Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma

TL;DR: This systematic review and meta-analyses confirmed the findings of a previous study published in “Rhinitis and Asthma: Causes and Prevention, 2nd Ed.” (2015) as well as new findings of “Mechanisms of Respiratory Disease and Allergology,” which confirmed the role of EMTs in the development of these diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease.

TL;DR: Representatives from many countries serve as a network for the dissemination and implementation of programs for diagnosis, management, and prevention of COPD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global strategy for asthma management and prevention: GINA executive summary.

TL;DR: It is reasonable to expect that in most patients with asthma, control of the disease can and should be achieved and maintained, and the Global Initiative for Asthma recommends a change in approach to asthma management, with asthma control, rather than asthma severity, being the focus of treatment decisions.

Bronchial responsiveness to histamine: relationship to diurnal variation of peak flow rate, improvement after bronchodilator, and airway calibre

TL;DR: The results identify a close relationship between nonspecific bronchial responsiveness to histamine and the variability in flow rates which occurs spontaneously and after bronchodilator, and raise the possibility that increased airflow obstruction in asthma may be a consequence of increased responsiveness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Health effects of passive smoking. 1. Parental smoking and lower respiratory illness in infancy and early childhood.

TL;DR: Although it is impossible to distinguish the independent contributions of prenatal and postnatal maternal smoking, the increased risk associated with smoking by other household members suggests that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke after birth is a cause of acute chest illness in young children.
Journal ArticleDOI

A cohort analysis of excess mortality in asthma and the use of inhaled beta-agonists.

TL;DR: This paper examines the question of asthma and non-asthma mortality using data from the entire cohort of 12,301 users of asthma drugs followed during the period 1980 through 1987 and finds that the risk of asthma death began to escalate drastically at about 1.4 canisters per month of inhaled beta-agonist, the recommended limit.

Quality of life in asthma. I: Internal consistency and validity of the SF-36 questionnaire

TL;DR: In this article, a study was carried out in 252 patients with asthma of variable severity (FEV) to assess the validity of a general QOL scale, the first French version of the SF-36 health status questionnaire (SF-36)
Journal ArticleDOI

A comparison of the efficacy and safety of inhaled corticosteroids in asthma.

TL;DR: The high safety margin of inhaled therapy with GCSs has encouraged an increasingly widespread use of these compounds in patients with moderate to severe asthma over the past 20 years, and especially where high firstpass metabolism to inactive compounds in the liver has been demonstrated.
