Asthma Incidence among Children and Adults: Findings from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey—United States, 2006–2008
TL;DR: Asthma incidence was higher in children than adults, higher in younger children than older children and adolescents, and higher in adult females than adult males, however, it was unable to identify statistically significant differences in asthma incidence among most race/ethnic groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of ciclesonide and fluticasone on hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal axis function in adults with mild-to-moderate persistent asthma
Brian J. Lipworth,Michael A. Kaliner,Craig LaForce,James W. Baker,Harold B. Kaiser,Dilip Amin,S. Kundu,James Williams,Renate Engelstaetter,Donald Banerji +9 more
TL;DR: These findings confirm the safety of ciclesonide therapy, demonstrating that at doses up to 640 microg/d, the drug does not affect sensitive markers of adrenal function.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Brussels Declaration: the need for change in asthma management.
Stephen T. Holgate,Hans Bisgaard,Leif Bjermer,Tari Haahtela,John Haughney,Rob Horne,Andrew McIvor,S. Palkonen,David Price,Mike Thomas,Erkka Valovirta,Ulrich Wahn +11 more
TL;DR: The present paper reviews the evidence supporting the need for change in asthma management and summarises the ten key points contained in the Brussels Declaration.
Journal ArticleDOI
The chitinase-like protein YKL-40: A possible biomarker of inflammation and airway remodeling in severe pediatric asthma
Jon R Konradsen,Jon R Konradsen,Anna James,Björn Nordlund,Björn Nordlund,Lovisa E. Reinius,Cilla Söderhäll,Erik Melén,Åsa M. Wheelock,Karin C. Lødrup Carlsen,Marika Lidegran,Marri Verhoek,Rolf G. Boot,Barbro Dahlén,Barbro Dahlén,Sven-Erik Dahlén,Gunilla Hedlin,Gunilla Hedlin +17 more
TL;DR: YKL-40 levels are increased in children with severe, therapy-resistant asthma compared to healthy children, and also compared to children with controlled asthma following correction for genotype.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quintupling Inhaled Glucocorticoids to Prevent Childhood Asthma Exacerbations
Daniel J. Jackson,Leonard B. Bacharier,David T. Mauger,Susan J. Boehmer,Avraham Beigelman,James F. Chmiel,Anne M. Fitzpatrick,Jonathan M. Gaffin,Wayne J. Morgan,Stephen P. Peters,Wanda Phipatanakul,William J. Sheehan,Michael D. Cabana,Fernando Holguin,Fernando D. Martinez,Jacqueline A. Pongracic,Sachin N. Baxi,M. Benson,Kathryn V. Blake,Ronina A. Covar,Deborah A. Olin,Hengameh H. Raissy,Rachel G. Robison,Kristie R. Ross,C.A. Sorkness,Robert F. Lemanske +37 more
TL;DR: In children with mild‐to‐moderate persistent asthma treated with daily inhaled glucocorticoids, quintupling the dose at the early signs of loss of asthma control did not reduce the rate of severe asthma exacerbations or improve other asthma outcomes and may be associated with diminished linear growth.

Dendritic cells and the control of immunity
TL;DR: Once a neglected cell type, dendritic cells can now be readily obtained in sufficient quantities to allow molecular and cell biological analysis and the realization that these cells are a powerful tool for manipulating the immune system is realized.

Lung volumes and forced ventilatory flows
TL;DR: Assessing the total lung capacity is indispensable in establishing a restrictive ventilatory defect or in diagnosing abnormal lung distensibility, as may occur in patients …
