Metagenomic insights into Cr(VI) effect on microbial communities and functional genes of an expanded granular sludge bed reactor treating high-nitrate wastewater.

TLDR
Metagenomic analysis indicated that Cr(VI) feeding posed no obvious effect on the overall function of the bacterial community, but altered the abundance of specific denitrifying genes, which was evidenced by quantitative real time PCR.

Bacterial Community Shift Drives Antibiotic Resistance Promotion during Drinking Water Chlorination.

TL;DR: The strong correlation between bacterial community shift and antibiotic resistome alteration observed in this study may shed new light on the mechanism behind the chlorination effects on antibiotic resistance.

Metagenomic Insights into Evolution of a Heavy Metal-Contaminated Groundwater Microbial Community

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors performed a metagenomic analysis of a stressed groundwater microbial community and found that prolonged exposure to high concentrations of heavy metals, nitric acid and organic solvents (~50 years) have resulted in a massive decrease in species and allelic diversity as well as a significant loss of metabolic diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Changes of resistome, mobilome and potential hosts of antibiotic resistance genes during the transformation of anaerobic digestion from mesophilic to thermophilic.

TL;DR: Results indicate that the better reduction of resistome abundance by thermophilic AD might be associated with the decrease of both the horizontal and vertical transferability of ARGs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bioaugmentation: An Emerging Strategy of Industrial Wastewater Treatment for Reuse and Discharge.

TL;DR: In this review, work on the bioaugmentation in the context of removal of important pollutants from industrial wastewater is summarized, with an emphasis on recalcitrant compounds, and strategies that can be used to improve the efficiency of bioAUgmentation are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metagenomic analysis of bacterial community composition and antibiotic resistance genes in a wastewater treatment plant and its receiving surface water.

TL;DR: The results showed that the WWTP had good removal efficiency on potential pathogenic bacteria (especially Arcobacter butzleri) and ARGs, and the increase in the abundance of potential pathogens and ARG at effluent outfall was observed, indicating that WWTP effluent might contribute to the dissemination of potential Pathogenic bacteria andARGs in the receiving river.

454 pyrosequencing reveals bacterial diversity of activated sludge from 14 sewage treatment plants.

TL;DR: Pyrosequencing analyses of multiple AS samples in this study revealed the minority populations that are hard to be explored by traditional molecular methods and showed that a large proportion of sequences could not be assigned to taxonomic affiliations even at the phylum/class levels.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of two next-generation sequencing technologies for resolving highly complex microbiota composition using tandem variable 16S rRNA gene regions

TL;DR: The latest developments of 454 and Illumina technologies offered higher resolution compared to their previous versions, and showed relative consistency with each other, but the majority of the Illumina reads could not be classified down to genus level due to their shorter length and higher error rates.

Phylogenetic Molecular Ecological Network of Soil Microbial Communities in Response to Elevated CO2

TL;DR: A novel random matrix theory (RMT)-based conceptual framework is described to discern phylogenetic molecular ecological networks of microbial communities based on high-throughput metagenomic sequencing data, among the first to document that the network interactions among different phylogenetic populations in soil microbial communities were substantially changed by a global change such as an elevated CO2 level.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metagenomic insights into chlorination effects on microbial antibiotic resistance in drinking water.

TL;DR: Investigation of chlorination effects on microbial antibiotic resistance in a drinking water treatment plant indicated that Proteobacteria were the main antibiotic resistant bacteria dominating in the drinking water and chlorine disinfection greatly affected microbial community structure, while prevalence of ARB and ARGs in chlorinated drinking water was highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI

PCR biases distort bacterial and archaeal community structure in pyrosequencing datasets.

TL;DR: The benefits of deeper sequencing efforts extend beyond greater OTU detection and result in higher precision in β-diversity analyses by reducing the variability between replicate libraries, despite the presence of more sequencing artifacts.
