TLDR
Phylogenetic analysis using 31 Vg sequences from 25 insect species reflects, in general, the current phylogenies of insects, suggesting that Vgs are still phylogenetically bound, although a divergence exists among them.

Molecular traces of alternative social organization in a termite genome

TL;DR: The genome and stage-specific transcriptomes of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Blattodea) are sequence and similarities in the number and expression of genes related to caste determination mechanisms support a hypothesized epigenetic regulation of caste differentiation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Predictive markers of honey bee colony collapse

TL;DR: The data show that DWV, Nosema ceranae, Varroa destructor and Vitellogenin can be predictive markers for winter colony losses, but their predictive power strongly depends on the season.
Journal ArticleDOI

Insect vitellogenin/lipophorin receptors: molecular structures, role in oogenesis, and regulatory mechanisms.

TL;DR: The expression studies clearly demonstrate that insect VgRs are ovary-bound receptors of the LDLR family as compared to LpRs, which are transcribed in a wide range of tissues including ovary, fat body, midgut, brain, testis, Malpighian tubules, and muscles.

Transfer of Immunity from Mother to Offspring Is Mediated via Egg-Yolk Protein Vitellogenin.

TL;DR: A molecular explanation for trans-generational immunity in insects and a previously undescribed role for vitellogenin are revealed, which is distributed widely in oviparous species, as the carrier of immune-priming signals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Juvenile hormone regulation of vitellogenin synthesis in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum.

TL;DR: RNA interference (RNAi)-aided knock-down in the expression of these genes showed that both JH and 20E were required for Vg gene expression, suggesting that JH is required for vitellogenin synthesis in the fat body and20E influences Vg synthesis through its action on oocyte maturation.

Occurrence of vitellogenin in drone honeybees (Apis mellifica)

TL;DR: The occurrence of vitellogenin in adult haploid drones of the honeybee, Apis mellifica, was determined by sensitive immunotechniques, i.e. two-dimensional Immunoelectrophoresis and SDS-PAGE immunoblotting using a monospecific anti-viteLLogenin-serum.
Journal ArticleDOI

Isolation and sequence of a partial vitellogenin cDNA from the cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera, Blattellidae), and characterization of the vitellogenin gene expression

TL;DR: A partial cDNA clone of the vitellogenin gene from the cockroach Blattella germanica has been isolated from a cDNA expression library using an anti-vitellin-vitescensin antiserum probe and the deduced amino acid sequence is similar to the homologous portion of theviteLLogenin of other insect species, especially that of the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Biosynthesis and Processing of Vitellogenin in the Fat Bodies of Females and Males of the Cockroach Leucophaea maderae

TL;DR: The juvenile hormone analog (JHA) methoprene was used to induce the synthesis of the yolk protein precursor vitellogenin (Vg) in adult females and males of the cockroach Leucophaea maderae and indicated that the co-translational glycosylation of V g precursors was required for the phosphorylation of the Vg precursor, as well as the secretion of Vg from the fat body.

Hormonal Integration of Egg Production in Rhodnius prolixus

TL;DR: The evidence dealing with hormonal controls on egg production in Rhodnius prolixus is reviewed, and the necessity for this redundancy is analysed in terms of the strategic advantage conferred on the insect by this network of controls.
