Recent developments in the fire retardancy of polymeric materials

TLDR
In this paper, the authors highlight the ecological impacts of using conventional flame retardants, thereby signifying the necessity to use eco-friendly agents, and explore the use of various nanofillers for this purpose, compare their performance with traditional systems, provide insights into different testing standards and combustion mechanisms, modelling aspects of the combustion behavior, and identify novel approaches that could be considered for meeting the fire safety standards with ecofriendly materials.

Electrically Conductive and Flame Retardant Graphene/Brominated Polystyrene/Maleic Anhydride Grafted High Density Polyethylene Nanocomposites with Satisfactory Mechanical Properties

TL;DR: In this article, an electrically conductive and flame-retardant maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (MA-HDPE) nanocomposites with satisfactory mechanical properties are fabricated by melting compounding MA-HPDE with polymethyleneimine-modified reduced graphene oxide (PEI@RGO) as conductive nanofiller and brominated polystyrene (BPS) as flame retardant.
Journal ArticleDOI

The application of organophosphorus flame-retardants in epoxy resin

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of two novel aryl phosphate mixtures on fire retardancy and the thermal stability of epoxy resins was studied by using the limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test (UL-94), cone calorimeter test, and thermogravimetric analysis, coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Book ChapterDOI

Flame retardant potential of clay nanoparticles

TL;DR: The non-flammability properties of nanoclay-based composites rely on the formation of carbonaceous layer shielding the underneath material during combustion as discussed by the authors, which is an important property of nanoclays.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phosphorus-containing polymers from THPS. VII. Synthesis of phosphorus-containing trialkynes and their metal-free 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction with azidated soybean-oil

TL;DR: In this article, a novel hydrolysis-resistant trialkyne, namely tris(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy methyl)phosphane oxide (TPOPO), was prepared from an environmentally friendly tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate (THPS), which was characterized by FT-IR, NMR (1H, 13C, 31P) and MS.

Accumulation and fragmentation of plastic debris in global environments.

TL;DR: Global plastics production and the accumulation of plastic waste are documented, showing that trends in mega- and macro-plastic accumulation rates are no longer uniformly increasing and that the average size of plastic particles in the environment seems to be decreasing.
Journal ArticleDOI

An overview of brominated flame retardants in the environment.

TL;DR: In this paper, the current state of knowledge is reviewed and areas for further research recommended to improve future monitoring and risk assessment efforts, and the authors suggest that the occurrence of high concentrations of certain PBDE isomers may be sufficient to elicit adverse effects in some wildlife.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plastics, the environment and human health: current consensus and future trends.

TL;DR: Current understanding of the benefits and concerns surrounding the use of plastics are synthesized, and future priorities, challenges and opportunities are looked to.
