SortMeRNA: Fast and accurate filtering of ribosomal RNAs in metatranscriptomic data.

TLDR
SortMeRNA, a new software designed to rapidly filter rRNA fragments from metatranscriptomic data, is presented, capable of handling large sets of reads and sorting out all fragments matching to the rRNA database with high sensitivity and low running time.
Abstract
MOTIVATION: The application of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies to RNAs directly extracted from a community of organisms yields a mixture of fragments characterizing both coding and non-coding types of RNAs. The tasks to distinguish among these and to further categorize the families of messenger RNAs and ribosomal RNAs is an important step for examining gene expression patterns of an interactive environment and the phylogenetic classification of the constituting species. RESULTS: We present SortMeRNA, a new software designed to rapidly filter ribosomal RNA fragments from metatranscriptomic data. It is capable of handling large sets of reads and sorting out all fragments matching to the rRNA database with high sensitivity and low running time. Isopod holobionts as promising models for lignocellulose degradation

TL;DR: The results show that the isopod holobionts are promising models to study lignocellulose degradation and can provide new enzymes and relevant lignosine-degrading bacteria strains for the biotechnological industries of biomass conversion.

Multiple quantitative trait loci contribute to resistance to bacterial canker incited by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae in kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis).

TL;DR: Mapping of quantitative trait loci regulating resistance to Psa in a diploid kiwifruit population, derived from a cross between an elite Psa-susceptible ‘Hort16A’ and a resistant male breeding parent P1, provides evidence that divergent genetic pathways interact to combat the virulent Psa strain.

Metabolic profile of main organic acids and its regulatory mechanism in solid-state fermentation of Chinese cereal vinegar.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper used metatranscriptomics to explore the metabolic profile of main organic acids in solid-state fermentation (SSF) technology and found that carbon metabolism is the dominant pathway during fermentation, among which pyruvate metabolism, glycolysis and starch and sucrose metabolism associated with organic acids were the most abundant.
