20 Feb 2003TL;DR: In this paper, a method for guaranteeing the service quality of Internet applications, when network resources are being used in an optimum manner, is presented, where the communications requirements at the IP access network are captured and stored as a user profile.
Abstract: Method for guaranteeing the service quality of Internet applications, when network resources are being used in an optimum manner. Accordingly for Internet applications, the communications requirements at the IP access network are captured and stored as a user profile. When an Internet application is activated the available network resources are compares with the stored user profile and control data determined.

12 Dec 1997TL;DR: In this article, a monitoring unit for mains-operated household appliances for coupling to AC power supply lines, with a detection device associated with the mains supply leads (9.1,9.2) and the network parameters, such as voltage, current, frequency or impedance detected, was presented.
Abstract: The invention relates to a monitoring unit for mains-operated household appliances for coupling to AC power supply lines, with a detection device associated with the mains supply leads (9.1,9.2) and the network parameters, such as voltage, current, frequency or impedance detected, a memory device 23, in which certain operating states of the household appliance (15) are stored with the corresponding network parameter, and an evaluation device (21,29,31) which reads out the respective operating state from the storage device (23) depending on the detected network parameters.

30 Jan 2012TL;DR: Effects for gender, but not for age, have been found for modality preferences and women prefer touch and voice over gesture for many scales assessed, whereas men do not show this pattern consistently.
Abstract: In order to examine user group differences in modality preferences, participants of either gender and two age groups have been asked to rate their experience after interacting with a smart-home system offering unimodal and multimodal input possibilities (voice, free-hand gesture, smartphone touch screen). Effects for gender, but not for age (younger and older adults) have been found for modality preferences. Women prefer touch and voice over gesture for many scales assessed, whereas men do not show this pattern consistently. Instead, they prefer gesture over voice for hedonic quality scales. Comparable results are obtained for technological expertise assessed individually. This interrelation of gender and expertise could not be solved and is discussed along with consequences of the results obtained. Keywords-multimodal dialog system; evaluation; user factors.

TL;DR: The feasibility of an open converged metro-access network approach for sharing optical layer resources like fibers and optical spectrum among different services and operators is demonstrated by the simultaneous operation of multiple services showing different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques.
Abstract: An open converged metro-access network approach allows for sharing optical layer resources like fibers and optical spectrum among different services and operators. We demonstrated experimentally the feasibility of such a concept by the simultaneous operation of multiple services showing different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques. Flexible access nodes are implemented including semiconductor optical amplifiers to create a transparent and reconfigurable optical ring network. The impact of cascaded optical amplifiers on the signal quality is studied along the ring. In addition, the influence of high power rival signals in the same waveband and in the same fiber is analyzed.

19 Oct 2007TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a method and a system for identifying a user, in particular the receiver and/or the sender of a user data unit that has been accessing an access network based on the broadband sharing principle.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a system for identifying a user, in particular the receiver and / or the sender of a user data unit that has been accessing an access network based on the broadband sharing principle. The method comprises the following steps: authenticating the user at a start of a user session, assigning a unique communication identifier to a user device of the user being connected to the access network, and storing in an database of a Virtual Wireless Service Provider the unique communication identifier the unique communication identifier, the session start time and a session end time.
