TL;DR: The new indoline dye was optimized for the amount of 4-tert-butyl pyridine in the electrolyte and cholic acid as a coadsorbent and the solar energy to current conversion efficiencies reached 8.00%, which was the highest obtained efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic dyes without an antireflection layer.
Abstract: We now report metal-free organic dyes having a new type of indoline structure, which exhibits high efficiencies in dye-sensitized solar cells. The solar energy to current conversion efficiencies with the new indoline dye was 6.51%. Under the same conditions, the N3 dye was 7.89% and the N719 dye was 8.26%. The new indoline dye was optimized for the amount of 4-tert-butyl pyridine in the electrolyte and cholic acid as a coadsorbent. Subsequently, the solar energy to current conversion efficiencies reached 8.00%. This value was the highest obtained efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic dyes without an antireflection layer.

TL;DR: In this article, an overview of MIMO systems with antenna selection is presented, where the antenna diversity is used to increase the capacity of the system and the use of the multiple antennas for the transmission of parallel data streams is discussed.
Abstract: Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems are those that have multiple antenna elements at both the transmitter and receiver. They were first investigated by computer simulations in the 1980s. Since that time, interest in MIMO systems has exploded. They are now being used for third-generation cellular systems (W-CDMA) and are discussed for future high-performance modes of the highly successful IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks. MIMO-related topics also occupy a considerable part of today's academic communications research. The multiple antennas in MIMO systems can be exploited in two different ways. One is the creation of a highly effective antenna diversity system; the other is the use of the multiple antennas for the transmission of several parallel data streams to increase the capacity of the system. This article presented an overview of MIMO systems with antenna selection. The transmitter, the receiver, or both use only the signals from a subset of the available antennas. This allows considerable reductions in the hardware expense.

TL;DR: Analysis of the WGS data revealed that the silkworm genome contains many repetitive sequences with an average length of <500 bp, which suggests that silkworm may have an active mechanism that promotes removal of transposons from the genome.
Abstract: We performed threefold shotgun sequencing of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) genome to obtain a draft sequence and establish a basic resource for comprehensive genome analysis. By using the newly developed RAMEN assembler, the sequence data derived from whole-genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing were assembled into 49,345 scaffolds that span a total length of 514 Mb including gaps and 387 Mb without gaps. Because the genome size of the silkworm is estimated to be 530 Mb, almost 97% of the genome has been organized in scaffolds, of which 75% has been sequenced. By carrying out a BLAST search for 50 characteristic Bombyx genes and 11,202 non-redundant expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in a Bombyx EST database against the WGS sequence data, we evaluated the validity of the sequence for elucidating the majority of silkworm genes. Analysis of the WGS data revealed that the silkworm genome contains many repetitive sequences with an average length of <500 bp. These repetitive sequences appear to have been derived from truncated transposons, which are interspersed at 2.5- to 3-kb intervals throughout the genome. This pattern suggests that silkworm may have an active mechanism that promotes removal of transposons from the genome. We also found evidence for insertions of mitochondrial DNA fragments at 9 sites. A search for Bombyx orthologs to Drosophila genes controlling sex determination in the WGS data revealed 11 Bombyx genes and suggested that the sex-determining systems differ profoundly between the two species.

Abstract: The solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation on composite graphite and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in a vinylene carbonate (VC)-containing electrolyte was analyzed using evolved gas analysis, Fourier transform infrared analysis, two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time of flight-secondary-ion mass spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy We found that the SEI layers derived from VC-containing electrolytes consist of polymer species such as poly (vinylene carbonate) (poly(VC)), an oligomer of VC, a ring-opening polymer of VC, and polyacetylene Moreover, lithium vinylene dicarbonate, (CHOCO 2 Li) 2 , lithium divinylene dicarbonate, (CH=CHOCO 2 Li) 2 , lithium divinylene dialkoxide, (CH=CHOLi) 2 , and lithium carboxylate, RCOOLi, were formed on graphite as VC reduction products The presence of VC in the ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolyte caused a decrease in the reductive gases of the EC dimethyl carbonate solvent such as C 2 H 4 , CH 4 , and CO The VC-derived SEI layer was formed at a potential more positive than 10 V vs Li/Li + Effective SEI formation by reduction of VC progresses before that of EC The thermal decomposition temperature of the SEI layer derived from VC shifted to a higher temperature compared to that derived from the VC-free electrolytes We concluded that the thermal stability of the VC-derived SEI layer has a close relation to high-temperature storage characteristics at elevated temperatures

TL;DR: Findings on reelin-positive marginal zone cells, in addition to the cortical interneurons, add to the emerging view that the neocortex consists of neuronal subtypes that originate from a focal source extrinsic to the neocort, migrate tangentially into the neoc Cortex, and thereby underlie neural organization of the neoc cortex.
Abstract: An early and fundamental step of the laminar organization of developing neocortex is controlled by the developmental programs that critically depend on the activities of reelin-positive cells in the marginal zone. However, the ontogeny of reelin-positive cells remained elusive. To gain insights into the spatial and temporal regulation of reelin-positive marginal zone cell development, we used a transgenic mouse line in which we defined the green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgene as a novel reliable molecular marker of reelin-positive marginal zone cells from the early stages of their development. We further used exo utero electroporation-mediated gene transfer that allows us to mark progenitor cells and monitor the descendants in the telencephalon in vivo. We show here the generation of reelin-positive marginal zone cells from the caudomedial wall of telencephalic vesicles, including the cortical hem, where the prominent expression of GFP is initially detected. These neurons tangentially migrate at the cortical marginal zone and are distributed throughout the entire neocortex in a caudomedial-high to rostrolateral-low gradient during the dynamic developmental period of corticogenesis. Therefore, our findings on reelin-positive marginal zone cells, in addition to the cortical interneurons, add to the emerging view that the neocortex consists of neuronal subtypes that originate from a focal source extrinsic to the neocortex, migrate tangentially into the neocortex, and thereby underlie neural organization of the neocortex.

TL;DR: In this paper, a planar light source device is characterized by including a refracting element disposed parallel to the row of point light sources and between the point light source and the hollow region for refraction.
Abstract: An object is to obtain a planar light source which is free from brightness variations or chromaticity variations by using a point light source having a high directivity for emitted light, and another object is to provide a liquid crystal display device capable of obtaining superior display characteristics by using this planar light source device. A planar light source device having an opening in the upper surface comprises a hollow box, a diffusion plate disposed in the opening, a reflecting plate disposed on the bottom of the hollow region of the box, and a plurality of point light sources disposed in a row along at least one side surface of the box. This planar light source device is characterized by including a refracting element disposed parallel to the row of point light sources and between the point light sources and the hollow region for refracting the light from the point light sources, whereby the light at an incident angle at which the brightness is greatest in the luminous intensity distribution of the light radiated to the irradiation subject surface of the refracting element is refracted to the bottom surface of the box by the refracting element.

TL;DR: The first experimental demonstration of a forward error correction (FEC) for 10-Gb/s optical communication systems based on a block turbo code (BTC) is reported and the ability of the proposed FEC system to achieve a receiver sensitivity of seven photons per information bit when combined with return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying modulation is demonstrated.
Abstract: The first experimental demonstration of a forward error correction (FEC) for 10-Gb/s optical communication systems based on a block turbo code (BTC) is reported. Key algorithms, e.g., extrinsic information, log-likelihood ratio, and soft decision reliability, are optimized to improve the correction capability. The optimum thresholds for a 3-bit soft decider are investigated analytically. A theoretical prediction is verified by experiment using a novel 3-bit soft decision large scale integrated circuit (LSI) and a BTC encoder/decoder evaluation circuit incorporating a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying optical transceiver. A net coding gain of 10.1 dB was achieved with only 24.6% redundancy for an input bit error rate of 1.98/spl times/10/sup -2/. This is only 0.9 dB away from the Shannon limit for a code rate of 0.8 for a binary symmetric channel. Superior tolerance to error bursts given by the adoption of 64-depth interleaving is demonstrated. The ability of the proposed FEC system to achieve a receiver sensitivity of seven photons per information bit when combined with return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying modulation is demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this article, a two-division structure heat treatment jig for semiconductor substrate that includes a silicon first jig that comes into direct contact with a substrate that is heat treated and supports the substrate is adopted as a heat treatment boat of a vertical heat treatment furnace, which can be widely applied as a stable heat treatment method of semiconductor substrates.
Abstract: When a two-division structure heat treatment jig for semiconductor substrate that includes a silicon first jig that comes into direct contact with a semiconductor substrate that is heat treated and supports the semiconductor substrate, and a second jig (holder) that holds the first jig and is mounted on a heat treatment boat is adopted as a heat treatment boat of a vertical heat treatment furnace, the stress concentrated during the heat treatment on a particular portion of the semiconductor substrate can be reduced; in the case of a semiconductor substrate large in the tare stress and having an outer shape of 300 mm being heat treated, or even in the case of the heat treatment being carried out under very high temperature conditions, the slips can be suppressed from occurring. The present invention can be widely applied as a stable heat treatment method of semiconductor substrates.

TL;DR: The advantages of using cross packet coding for delay-sensitive applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol, video-conferencing, etc., on bursty packet networks by comparing the new encoders to maximum distance separable (MDS) codes.
Abstract: We present a new class of systematic, time-invariant, convolutional encoders suitable for low delay burst erasure correction. Specifically, we show that the new encoders have the shortest possible decoding delay required to correct all bursts of a given length with a fixed redundancy. By comparing the new encoders to maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, we show that the latter generally require either more redundancy or more delay to correct bursts of a given length. In addition, we show that the new encoders can achieve better performance than MDS codes on a simple two-state Markov erasure channel. Thus, we demonstrate the advantages of using cross packet coding for delay-sensitive applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol, video-conferencing, etc., on bursty packet networks. Finally, we discuss suitable performance measures for encoders designed to correct both burst and random erasures and report the results of a computer search for such hybrid encoders.

TL;DR: Results suggest that, despite the identical composition of tau isoforms, different proteolytic processing of abnormal tau takes place in these two diseases, and such a biochemical divergence may be related to the neuropathological features of these diseases.
Abstract: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD) are neurodegenerative diseases that are characterized by intracytoplasmic aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau with four microtubule-binding repeats. Although PSP and CBD have distinctive pathological features, no biochemical difference in aggregated tau has been identified. In this study, we examined the brains of eight patients with PSP, six patients with CBD, and one atypical case with pathological features of both CBD and PSP. On immunoblots of sarkosyl-insoluble brain extracts, a 33kDa band predominated in the low molecular weight tau fragments in PSP, whereas two closely related bands of approximately 37kDa predominated in CBD. Immunoblots of the atypical case showed both the 33kDa band and the 37kDa doublet. Protein sequencing and immunochemical analyses showed that the 33kDa band and the 37kDa doublet consisted of the carboxyl half of tau with different amino termini. These results suggest that, despite the identical composition of tau isoforms, different proteolytic processing of abnormal tau takes place in these two diseases. Such a biochemical divergence may be related to the neuropathological features of these diseases.

TL;DR: The RT-PCR test is the most sensitive test for detection of hMPV, and a serological test may be useful to differentiate between primary infection and reinfection with h MPV.
Abstract: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has been recently discovered as an etiological agent of acute respiratory infections. Our purpose was to asses the virological and clinical features of children with respiratory infections caused by hMPV. We examined 658 nasopharyngeal swab samples obtained from 637 children with respiratory infections for hMPV by using reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). A total of 268 samples from 637 children were inoculated onto tertiary monkey kidney cells. A total of 36 serum samples (26 in the acute phase and 10 in the convalescent phase) from the 26 hMPV-positive children were tested for immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies to hMPV by using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. We detected hMPV in 57 (8.9%) of the 637 samples by using RT-PCR and isolated 7 (2.6%) hMPV strains of the 268 samples in cell cultures. A total of 12 (46.2%) of 26 hMPV-positive children were suspected to have primary infection with hMPV as determined by an indirect immunofluorescence assay. The infected children were diagnosed as having wheezy bronchitis (36.8%), upper respiratory tract infection (26.3%), bronchitis (22.8%), and pneumonia (14.0%). We showed that two hMPV groups were circulating in different regions during the same period and that reinfection with hMPV frequently occurs in childhood. The RT-PCR test is the most sensitive test for detection of hMPV, and a serological test may be useful to differentiate between primary infection and reinfection with hMPV.

TL;DR: The crystal structure of the mouse geminin–Cdt1 complex is described, and it is indicated that the N-terminal region of tGeminin might be required to anchor tCdt 1, and the C-terminals of t Geminin prevents access of the MCM complex to tCdit1 through steric hindrance.
Abstract: To maintain chromosome stability in eukaryotic cells, replication origins must be licensed by loading mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM2-7) complexes once and only once per cell cycle 1-9 . This licensing control is achieved through the activities of geminin 10-12 and cyclin-dependent kinases 9,13,14 . Geminin binds tightly to Cdtl, an essential component of the replication licensing system 6,15-18 , and prevents the inappropriate reinitiation of replication on an already fired origin. The inhibitory effect of geminin is thought to prevent the interaction between Cdtl and the MCM helicase 19,20 . Here we describe the crystal structure of the mouse geminin-Cdtl complex using tGeminin (residues 79-157, truncated geminin) and tCdtl (residues 172-368, truncated Cdtl). The amino-terminal region of a coiled-coil dimer of tGeminin interacts with both N-terminal and carboxy-terminal parts of tCdtl. The primary interface relies on the steric complementarity between the tGeminin dimer and the hydrophobic face of the two short N-terminal helices of tCdtl and, in particular, Pro 181, Ala 182, Tyr 183, Phe 186 and Leu 189. The crystal structure, in conjunction with our biochemical data, indicates that the N-terminal region of tGeminin might be required to anchor tCdtl, and the C-terminal region of tGeminin prevents access of the MCM complex to tCdtl through steric hindrance.

TL;DR: Indoline dyes are shown to be highly stable to photoredox processes by cyclic voltammogram and the cost of indoline dye is much less than for N3 due to ease of preparation.
Abstract: A solar-to-electric conversion efficiency of 5.1% is achieved with this new dye, compared to 5.8% for N3 dye under the same experimental conditions. Although these indoline dyes are slightly less efficient than N3 dye [cis-Ru(II)(2,2′-bipyridil-4,4′-dicarboxilic acid) (NCS)], the cost would be expected much lower because it does not contain any noble, rare metals in the structure and also it is easy to prepare specially for the mass production. Furthermore, indoline dyes are shown to be highly stable to photoredox processes by cyclic voltammogram.

TL;DR: An unsupervised, low-latency traffic congestion estimation algorithm that operates on the MPEG video data, and employs Gaussian Mixture Hidden Markov Models (GM-HMM) to detect traffic condition.
Abstract: We propose an unsupervised, low-latency traffic congestion estimation algorithm that operates on the MPEG video data. We extract congestion features directly in the compressed domain, and employ Gaussian Mixture Hidden Markov Models (GM-HMM) to detect traffic condition. First, we construct a multi-dimensional feature vector from the parsed DCT coefficients and motion vectors. Then, we train a set of left-to-right HMM chains corresponding to five traffic patterns (empty, open flow, mild congestion, heavy congestion, and stopped), and use a Maximum Likelihood (ML) criterion to determine the state from the outputs of the separate HMM chains. We calculate a confidence score to assess the reliability of the detection results. The proposed method is computationally efficient and modular. Our tests prove that the feature vector is invariant to different illumination conditions, e.g., sunny, cloudy, dark. Furthermore, we do not need to impose different models for different camera setups, thus we significantly reduce the system initialization workload and improve its adaptability. Experimental results show that the precision rate of the presented algorithm is very high- around 95%.

TL;DR: An original demodulation scheme adapted to a multi-band ON-OFF keying modulation, which turns out to be a non-trivial energetic threshold comparison whose precise theoretical computation admits an analytical solution proving its feasibility.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide an operative way of achieving high data rates for impulse radio (IR) transmission based systems. Since applications targeted for ultra wide band (UWB) are liable to be low-cost, we especially focus on simple transceiver design. To that effect, we present an original demodulation scheme adapted to a multi-band ON-OFF keying modulation. From the receiver point of view, we impose relaxed channel estimation constraints and derive suitable signal processing schemes and simple hardware architectures. Indeed, we only consider the benefit from a limited a priori channel knowledge: approximative delay spread and energy level. The associated optimum demodulation turns out to be a non-trivial energetic threshold comparison whose precise theoretical computation admits an analytical solution proving its feasibility. Numerical results are eventually performed for IEEE 802.15.3a channel models and FCC requirements; they obviously demonstrate the potential of these techniques.

TL;DR: Using immunochemistry, Western blot analysis, and kinase activity measurements, the authors demonstrate that neurofilament hyperphosphorylation in neocortical pyramidal neurons is accompanied by activation of both Erk1,2 and calpain.
Abstract: Aberrant phosphorylation of the neuronal cytoskeleton is an early pathological event in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we demonstrate in the brains of AD patients that neurofilament hyperphosphorylation in neocortical pyramidal neurons is accompanied by activation of both Erk1,2 and calpain. Using immunochemistry, Western blot analysis, and kinase activity measurements, we show in primary hippocampal and cerebellar granule (CG) neurons that calcium influx activates calpain and Erk1,2 and increases neurofilament phosphorylation on carboxy terminal polypeptide sites known to be modulated by Erk1,2 and to be altered in AD. Blocking Erk1,2 activity either with antisense oligonucleotides to Erk1,2 mRNA sequences or by specifically inhibiting its upstream activating kinase MEK1,2 markedly reduced neurofilament phosphorylation. Calpeptin, a cell-permeable calpain inhibitor, blocked both Erk1,2 activation and neurofilament hyperphosphorylation at concentrations that inhibit calpain-mediated cleavage of brain spectrin. By contrast, inhibiting Erk1,2 with U-0126, a specific inhibitor of Mek1,2, had no appreciable effect on ionomycin-induced calpain activation. These findings demonstrate that, under conditions of calcium injury in neurons, calpains are upstream activators of Erk1,2 signaling and are likely to mediate in part the hyperphosphorylation of neurofilaments and tau seen at early stages of AD as well as the neuron survival-related functions of the MAP kinase pathway.
