Observer-independence in the presence of a horizon

Abstract: In the famous thought experiment known as Wigner's friend, Wigner assigns an entangled state to the composite quantum system consisting of his friend and her observed system. In the context of this thought experiment, Brukner recently derived a no-go theorem for observer-independent facts, i.e. those facts that would be common to both Wigner and his friend, and initial experimental tests have given it strong support. In this article, we demonstrate a loophole in the theorem that manifests in the presence of a horizon even if Wigner and his friend are on the same side of the horizon. The loophole requires that Wigner and his friend both unambiguously demonstrate that they are in inertial frames. We then argue that unambiguously proving that they are both in inertial frames requires unambiguously proving the existence of Unruh radiation. However, we also argue that if they cannot prove this, then there are still limitations on observer-independent facts that require that some of those facts remain unknowable. As such, observer-independent facts remain illusory.

Development of the Fogg Intent-to-Screen for HIV (ITS HIV) questionnaire.

Abstract: In this paper, we describe the development and psychometric properties of the Fogg Intent-to-Screen for HIV questionnaire (ITS HIV), which measures peoples' beliefs and intentions toward HIV screening. The ITS HIV was developed using the Theory of Planned Behavior as the framework for a developmental process that included qualitative interviews, a validation phase, two pilot tests, and a field test of the final 55-item questionnaire. The field test involved 312 homeless persons from five New England states. Cronbach alphas of the direct measures scales ranged from .72 to .90. Findings from a path analysis verified the construct validity. The psychometric estimates from these analyses suggest the ITS HIV questionnaire is appropriate for use in clinical practice or to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

Coral loss alters guarding and farming behavior of a Caribbean damselfish

Abstract: Coral loss is a major element of global ecological change in the oceans that may shape the behavior of keystone species such as habitat-attached animals. Farming damselfishes cultivate and aggressively protect algal garden within their territory, thereby shaping local fish assemblages and macro-algae diversity. Following the widespread loss of live branching coral throughout Florida and the Caribbean Sea, dusky damselfish (Stegastes adustus) have modified their territorial behavior. We compared antagonistic behavior, and size and algal species composition of territories of dusky damselfish on dead branching coral rubble and live boulder coral in the Dry Tortugas National Park, USA. Even though similar numbers of “intruders” entered each habitat type, dusky damselfish on rubble territories chased out significantly more fishes, had larger territories and more species of algae were present in their gardens. This study shows that dusky damselfish successfully occupy living and dead coral areas; however, there are potential trade-offs between defending a larger territory and cultivating fewer algal species.
