TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine justice perceptions using potential employee conflict over provision of a work-life benefit, and link the findings to existing theory and research in organizational justice, and find that women are more likely than men to prefer equity as the allocation norm.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine justice perceptions using potential employee conflict over provision of a work‐life benefit, and to link the findings to existing theory and research in organizational justice.Design/methodology/approach – A total of 208 undergraduates at a liberal arts college responded to a version of the scenario. There were six versions, representing varied organizational conditions, with hypotheses based on both theory and previous empirical work.Findings – Students were asked whether they preferred equity (contribution), equality or need as the allocation norm to be used in the scenario. Under all organizational conditions, equity is favored over the other two norms, but some differences emerge. Organizational conditions that are less empowering and more stressful lead to higher preference for equality and need than when organizations are seen as treating employees well. In contrast with some earlier findings, women are more likely than men to prefer equity as the ba...

TL;DR: Eddington was the first person to suggest that there is a continuous outflow of ions from the Sun as discussed by the authors, based on a mathematical analysis of the shapes of the envelopes of Comet Morehouse, a nonperiodic comet discovered in 1908.
Abstract: Arthur Eddington’s very early career is often overshadowed by his later accomplishments. For many years the work he performed at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, was little studied. In some cases, citations to his work in major journals did not appear for more than three decades. One of his earliest works was a mathematical analysis of the shapes of the envelopes of Comet Morehouse, a non-periodic comet discovered in 1908. Eddington’s description of the envelopes, in mathematical terms, as paraboloids projected in two dimensions as parabolas, was not studied in earnest until after his death. Although the primary conclusion of his work has recently been modified, there are several other statements he makes about the source of the creation of these envelopes that suggest he should be acknowledged as the first person to suggest that there is a continuous outflow of ions from the Sun.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that green-light illumination of methylcobalamin effectively causes DNA strand scission based on gel mobility assays, which is due to the generation of carbon-centered radicals based on the results of a radical trapping study.
Abstract: Light-responsive compounds have been used to manipulate biological systems with spatial and temporal control of the event of interest. Illumination of alkylcobalamins with green light (>500 nm) produces carbon-centered radicals, which have been demonstrated to effectively cause DNA damage. Molecules that cause DNA and RNA strand scission are useful for studying polynucleotide structure and the binding of small molecules and proteins to polynucleotides. Most molecules that cause DNA damage in a light-dependent manner require high energy, short wavelength ultraviolet light, which is readily absorbed by nucleotide bases causing damage to the polynucleotides. Therefore, using alkylcobalamins is advantageous for causing strand scission of polynucleotides, because they are activated by light wavelengths that are not absorbed by nucleotide bases. Green-light illumination of methylcobalamin effectively causes DNA strand scission based on gel mobility assays. This cleavage is due to the generation of carbon-centered radicals based on the results of a radical trapping study. In addition, synthesis of an alkylcobalamin with a DNA binding moiety, spermine, improves DNA cleavage efficacy by an order of magnitude in comparison with methylcobalamin.

TL;DR: Examining the police response to incidents involving same-sex and heterosexual couples in 2,625,753 cases across 5,481 jurisdictions in 36 states and Washington, D.C. shows that incidents with same- sex couples are less likely to result in arrest, but far more likely toresult in dual arrests, in most incident configurations.
Abstract: Despite concern, little research has been conducted on whether victims in same-sex relationships receive disparate treatment from law enforcement. Utilizing 2000 through 2009 National Incident-Base...
