Abstract: Measurements of the jet energy calibration and transverse momentum resolution in CMS are presented, performed with a data sample collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb−1. The transverse momentum balance in dijet and γ/Z+jets events is used to measure the jet energy response in the CMS detector, as well as the transverse momentum resolution. The results are presented for three different methods to reconstruct jets: a calorimeter-based approach, the ``Jet-Plus-Track'' approach, which improves the measurement of calorimeter jets by exploiting the associated tracks, and the ``Particle Flow'' approach, which attempts to reconstruct individually each particle in the event, prior to the jet clustering, based on information from all relevant subdetectors

Abstract: We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of W and Z bosons in hadron collisions. We present a fully exclusive calculation up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. To perform this NNLO computation, we use a recently proposed version of the subtraction formalism. The calculation includes the gamma-Z interference, finite-width effects, the leptonic decay of the vector bosons, and the corresponding spin correlations. Our calculation is implemented in a parton level Monte Carlo program. The program allows the user to apply arbitrary kinematical cuts on the final-state leptons and the associated jet activity and to compute the corresponding distributions in the form of bin histograms. We show selected numerical results at the Fermilab Tevatron and the LHC.

Abstract: In this paper, we present new conditions ensuring existence, uniqueness, and Global Asymptotic Stability (GAS) of the equilibrium point for a large class of neural networks. The results are applicable to both symmetric and nonsymmetric interconnection matrices and allow for the consideration of all continuous nondecreasing neuron activation functions. Such functions may be unbounded (but not necessarily surjective), may have infinite intervals with zero slope as in a piece-wise-linear model, or both. The conditions on GAS rely on the concept of Lyapunov Diagonally Stable (or Lyapunov Diagonally Semi-Stable) matrices and are proved by employing a class of Lyapunov functions of the generalized Lur'e-Postnikov type. Several classes of interconnection matrices of applicative interest are shown to satisfy our conditions for GAS. In particular, the results are applied to analyze GAS for the class of neural circuits introduced for solving linear and quadratic programming problems. In this application, the principal result here obtained is that these networks are GAS also when the constraint amplifiers are dynamical, as it happens in any practical implementation. >

Abstract: A large series of T cell clones (TCC) specific for purified protein derivative (PPD) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (total 60) or Toxocara canis excretory/secretory (TES) antigen (total 69) were established from the peripheral blood of two healthy individuals and analyzed for their profile of cytokine production in response to stimulation with either the specific antigen or the polyclonal activator phorbol myristate acetate plus anti-CD3 antibody. Under both these experimental conditions, the great majority of PPD-specific TCC secreted IL-2 and IFN-gamma but not, or limited amounts of, IL-4 and IL-5. In contrast, most TES-specific TCC secreted IL-4 and IL-5 but not, or limited amounts of, IL-2 and IFN-gamma. PPD-specific TCC that failed to secrete IL-4 and IL-5, and TES-specific TCC that failed to secrete IL-2 and IFN-gamma, were found to lack transcripts for IL-4 and IL-5, or for IL-2 and IFN-gamma, respectively. During the course of the study, over a 6-mo period, the functional phenotype of both TES- and PPD-specific TCC was repeatedly assessed and remained constant. These data demonstrate that T cells with stable Th1 or Th2 functional pattern exist not only in mice but also in humans and suggest that in the course of natural immunization certain infectious agents preferentially expand T cell subsets with stable and definite profile of cytokine production.
