Abstract: The kinetic resolution of racemates constitutes one major route to manufacture optically pure compounds. The enzymatic kinetic resolution of ( R , S )-1-phenylethanol over Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) by using vinyl acetate as the acyl donor in the acylation reaction was chosen as model reaction. A systematic screening and optimization of the reaction parameters, such as enzyme, ionic liquid and substrates concentrations with respect to the final product concentration, were performed. The enantioselectivity of immobilized CALB commercial preparation, Novozym 435, was assayed in several ionic liquids as reaction media. In particular, three different ionic liquids: (i) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [bmim][PF 6 ], (ii) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim][BF 4 ] and (iii) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium triflimide [emim][NTf 2 ] were tested. At 6.6% (w/w) of Novozym 435, dispersed in 9.520 M of [bmim][PF 6 ] at 313.15 K, using an equimolar ratio of vinyl acetate/( R , S )-1-phenylethanol after 3 h of bioconversion, the highest possible conversion (50%) was reached with enantiomeric excess for substrate higher than 99%.

Abstract: We describe the early spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the first human-to-human transmission networks, in Romania. We profiled the first 147 cases referring to sex, age, place of residence, probable country of infection, return day to Romania, COVID-19 confirmation date and the probable modes of COVID-19 transmissions. Also, we analysed human-to-human transmission networks and explored their structural features and time dynamics. In Romania, local cycles of transmission were preceded by imported cases, predominantly from Italy. We observed an average of 4.8 days (s.d. = 4.0) between the arrival to a Romanian county and COVID-19 confirmation. Furthermore, among the first 147 COVID-19 patients, 88 were imported cases (64 carriers from Italy), 54 were domestic cases, while for five cases the source of infection was unknown. The early human-to-human transmission networks illustrated a limited geographical dispersion, the presence of super-spreaders and the risk of COVID-19 nosocomial infections. COVID-19 occurred in Romania through case importation from Italy. The largest share of the Romanian diaspora is concentrated especially in the northern parts of Italy, heavily affected by COVID-19. Human mobility (including migration) accounts for the COVID-19 transmission and it should be given consideration while tailoring prevention measures.

Abstract: The most common assumption in evolutionary game theory is that players should adopt a strategy that warrants the highest payoff. However, recent studies indicate that the spatial selection for cooperation is enhanced if an appropriate fraction of the population chooses the most common rather than the most profitable strategy within the interaction range. Such conformity might be due to herding instincts or crowd behavior in humans and social animals. In a heterogeneous population where individuals differ in their degree, collective influence, or other traits, an unanswered question remains who should conform. Selecting conformists randomly is the simplest choice, but it is neither a realistic nor the optimal one. We show that, regardless of the source of heterogeneity and game parametrization, socially the most favorable outcomes emerge if the masses conform. On the other hand, forcing leaders to conform significantly hinders the constructive interplay between heterogeneity and coordination, leading to evolutionary outcomes that are worse still than if conformists were chosen randomly. We conclude that leaders must be able to create a following for network reciprocity to be optimally augmented by conformity. In the opposite case, when leaders are castrated and made to follow, the failure of coordination impairs the evolution of cooperation.
