Air-Sea Gas Exchange Rates: Introduction and Synthesis

TLDR
In this article, the basic equations governing air-sea gas exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process is given, and experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarized.
Abstract
In this chapter we attempt to present a brief introduction to the subject of air-sea gas exchange First the basic equations governing such exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process Following this, experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarised Finally, we present what seems to us to be the best current synthesis of the wind tunnel and field results for the prediction of gas exchange rates across the sea surface

Seasonal variation and biogeochemical cycling of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea

TL;DR: In this paper, the concentrations of DMS and DMSP showed a significant seasonal variation with higher values in summer, which corresponded well with the seasonal change of Chl-a in the study area.

Effect of interannual variation in winter vertical mixing on CH4 dynamics in a subtropical reservoir

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined vertical and seasonal profiles of dissolved CH4 and its carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) and conducted incubation experiments to assess CH4 production and oxidation in the deep subtropical Fei-Tsui Reservoir (FTR; Taiwan).

Global average of air‐sea CO2 transfer velocity from QuikSCAT scatterometer wind speeds

TL;DR: In this article, the uncertainty of the relationship between air-sea CO2 transfer velocity, k, and wind speed, U, has been a topic of debate for some time, because k global average, as deduced from Geochemical Ocean Sections Study oceanic 14C inventory has differed from that deduced by experimental k-U relationships.

13C constraints on ocean carbon cycle models

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the sensitivity of oceanic δ13C fields to overturning and gas exchange in a suite of ocean general circulation models and found that deep and oceanic mean δ 13C in the models were sensitive to the balance between deep waters forming in the North Atlantic and the Southern Ocean.

Physico‐chemical modeling of the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1) Lagrangian B: 2. DMS emission, transport and oxidation at the mesoscale

TL;DR: In this paper, a three-dimensional mesoscale meteorological model was used to study the interplay between the dynamical (turbulent mixing and advection) and physico-chemical processes that control dimethylsulfide DMS concentrations and their distribution in the marine boundary layer (MBL) during the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment ACE 1.

Gas exchange rates between air and sea

TL;DR: In this article, the average film thickness for the world ocean based on the distribution of natural radiocarbon, bomb-produced radioccarbon, and radon are in good agreement, and Radon data from the BOMEX area and from station PAPA lend support to Kanwisher's suggestion that gas exchange rates should vary in proportion to the square of the wind velocity.

Vollständige Darstellung der turbulenten Geschwindigkeitsverteilung in glatten Leitungen

TL;DR: From experimental investigations of turbulent exchange of momentum a formula is derived for the velocity of turbulent flow in tubes and pipes in this paper, which gives a complete representation of the velocity distribution, i. e. it holds good close to the wall as well as in the core of the flow.
