Air-Sea Gas Exchange Rates: Introduction and Synthesis

TLDR
In this article, the basic equations governing air-sea gas exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process is given, and experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarized.
Abstract
In this chapter we attempt to present a brief introduction to the subject of air-sea gas exchange First the basic equations governing such exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process Following this, experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarised Finally, we present what seems to us to be the best current synthesis of the wind tunnel and field results for the prediction of gas exchange rates across the sea surface

Carbon Dioxide Emission from European Estuaries

TL;DR: The partial pressure of carbon dioxide in surface waters and related atmospheric exchanges were measured in nine European estuaries, representing 5 to 10% of present anthropogenic CO2 emissions for Western Europe.

Gas Exchange in Rivers and Estuaries: Choosing a Gas Transfer Velocity

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of gas transfer velocity measurements in estuaries and rivers reveals a general lack of agreement among studies and physically-based predictive models and that it will be difficult to use gas exchange in rivers or estusaries to accurately mass-balance gases of interest.

Increased marine production of N2O due to intensifying anoxia on the Indian continental shelf.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a global expansion of hypoxic zones may lead to an increase in marine production and emission of N2O, which, as a potent greenhouse gas, could contribute significantly to the accumulation of radiatively active trace gases in the atmosphere.

Inventorying emissions from nature in Europe

TL;DR: In this paper, a new set of guidelines has been developed for assessing the emissions of sulphur, nitrogen oxides, NH3, CH4, and nonmethane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) from biogenic and other natural sources in Europe.

Ecological significance of compatible solute accumulation by micro‐organisms: from single cells to global climate

TL;DR: The evolutionary selection for the accumulation of a specific compatible solute may not depend solely upon its function during osmoadaptation, but also upon the secondary benefits its accumulation provides, such as increased tolerance of other environmental stresses prevalent in the organism's niche.

Gas exchange rates between air and sea

TL;DR: In this article, the average film thickness for the world ocean based on the distribution of natural radiocarbon, bomb-produced radioccarbon, and radon are in good agreement, and Radon data from the BOMEX area and from station PAPA lend support to Kanwisher's suggestion that gas exchange rates should vary in proportion to the square of the wind velocity.

Vollständige Darstellung der turbulenten Geschwindigkeitsverteilung in glatten Leitungen

TL;DR: From experimental investigations of turbulent exchange of momentum a formula is derived for the velocity of turbulent flow in tubes and pipes in this paper, which gives a complete representation of the velocity distribution, i. e. it holds good close to the wall as well as in the core of the flow.
