Air-Sea Gas Exchange Rates: Introduction and Synthesis

TLDR
In this article, the basic equations governing air-sea gas exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process is given, and experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarized.
Abstract
In this chapter we attempt to present a brief introduction to the subject of air-sea gas exchange First the basic equations governing such exchange are given, then a review of some models proposed to describe the gas transfer process Following this, experimental approaches through both laboratory (principally using wind/water tunnels) and field measurements are summarised Finally, we present what seems to us to be the best current synthesis of the wind tunnel and field results for the prediction of gas exchange rates across the sea surface

Noble gas constraints on air-sea gas exchange and bubble fluxes

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a three-year observational time series of five noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) at the Bermuda Atlantic Time series Study (BATS) site in tandem with a onedimensional upper ocean model to develop an improved parameterization for air-sea gas exchange that explicitly includes separate components for diffusive gas exchange and bubble processes.

Relationship between air‐sea gas transfer and short wind waves

TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between air-sea transfer velocities of weakly soluble, nonreactive gases and wind-generated surface waves over clean water surfaces and in the presence of surface films was investigated.

A seasonal tropical sink for atmospheric CO2 in the Atlantic ocean : the role of the Amazon river discharge

TL;DR: In the western equatorial Atlantic ocean, near-surface observations show that during summertime, the low-salinity oceanic water, arising from mixing with the Amazon River discharge at the equator, has low CO, fugacity levels.

Methyl iodide distribution in the ocean and fluxes to the atmosphere

TL;DR: Methyl iodide concentrations have been measured in air samples, surface, and subsurface waters of the NW Atlantic, NE Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans They are shown to be substantially oversaturated in all surface waters as mentioned in this paper.

Climate sensitivity to black carbon aerosol from fossil fuel combustion

TL;DR: In this paper, the HadSM4 configuration of the Hadley Centre climate model, extended by the addition of interactive black carbon and sulphate aerosol schemes, was used to investigate how the climate sensitivity to black carbon aerosol forcing compares with the sensitivity to greenhouse gas forcing.

Gas exchange rates between air and sea

TL;DR: In this article, the average film thickness for the world ocean based on the distribution of natural radiocarbon, bomb-produced radioccarbon, and radon are in good agreement, and Radon data from the BOMEX area and from station PAPA lend support to Kanwisher's suggestion that gas exchange rates should vary in proportion to the square of the wind velocity.

Vollständige Darstellung der turbulenten Geschwindigkeitsverteilung in glatten Leitungen

TL;DR: From experimental investigations of turbulent exchange of momentum a formula is derived for the velocity of turbulent flow in tubes and pipes in this paper, which gives a complete representation of the velocity distribution, i. e. it holds good close to the wall as well as in the core of the flow.
