TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Global fitness profiling of fission yeast deletion strains by barcode sequencing

TL;DR: Deep sequencing is used to accurately characterize the barcode sequences in the deletion library, thus enabling the quantitative measurement of the fitness of fission yeast deletion strains by barcode sequencing.

Numerical and functional response of predators to a long-term decline in mammalian prey at a semi-arid Neotropical site.

TL;DR: Given the absence of a clear functional response to the most irruptive species, predators seemed unlikely to have been responsible for the observed crash, but may be prolonging the crash and delaying the return of small-mammal populations to typical densities.

Forest Invasibility in Communities in Southeastern New York

TL;DR: A positive factor-ceiling relationship between native and invasive diversity is found, which contradicts earlier hypotheses concerning the relationships between species diversity and invasion, but supports some recent findings.

Population ecology of the endangered butterflies Maculinea teleius and M. nausithous and the implications for conservation

TL;DR: The results indicate that populations of both species are typically stable within their sites, but there is little inter-site mobility and thus landscape corridors seem necessary to enhance metapopulation viability.

Feeding frequency and parental division of labour in the double-brooded great tit Parus major: Effects of manipulating brood size

TL;DR: The relative contribution of each sex and total effort expended in feeding nestlings in the great tit Parus major in relation to artificially altered brood size was studied, and male and female brood-feeding frequency was related to brood size in a similar way.
