TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Species richness, species range size and ecological specialisation among African primates: geographical patterns and conservation implications

TL;DR: That conservation efforts increasingly focus on regions of high species richness may be appropriate if these regions are also characterised by species that are more restricted in both their range size and their ecological versatility, although special consideration may be required for some areas of low species richness.

Evidence of temperature‐dependent sex determination in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.)

TL;DR: Results provide for the first time clear evidence that temperature during the very early developmental stages is the crucial factor affecting the process of sex differentiation of the sea bass, with low rearing temperatures resulting in sex proportions consistently skewed in favor of females.

Fruit Bats (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) as Seed Dispersers and Pollinators in a Lowland Malaysian Rain Forest1

TL;DR: The food resources exploited by fruit bats within an old-growth Malaysian dipterocarp forest were characterized and test the viability of the seeds they disperse, and the proportion of trees that are to some degree dependent upon bats for seed dispersal and/or pollination was provided.

Microbial loop carbon cycling in ocean environments studied using a simple steady-state model

TL;DR: A simple steady-state model is used to examine the microbial loop as a pathway for organic C in marine systems, constrained by observed estimates of bacterial to primary production ratio (BP:PP) and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE), and indicates acceptable combinations of parameter values for given BP:PP.

Predicting suitable habitat for deep-water gorgonian corals on the Atlantic and Pacific Continental Margins of North America

TL;DR: In this article, the spatial suitability of deep-water coral habitat on both the Pacific and Atlantic Continental Mar- gins of North America (PCM and ACM) using Biomapper was explored.
