TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.Abstract:
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.read more

Pesticide abuse in Europe: effects on the Cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) population in Spain
Mauro Hernández,Antoni Margalida +1 more
TL;DR: Investigation of incidents of pesticide poisoning of the Cinereous vulture in Spain during the period 1990-2006 found that stronger regulation and control of these in the EU could result in a decrease of mortality related to pesticide abuse in several endangered species without a significant effect on agriculture.

Predator-prey ratios on cocoa along a land-use gradient in Indonesia
TL;DR: Transformation of traditional into intensified agroforestry systems had a great impact on arthropod community structure on cocoa and the reduced predator–prey ratio in intensified systems can be related to their reduced species richness of shade trees and the changed microclimate.

Odd fish abandon mixed-species groups when threatened
TL;DR: These results may be explained by differences in the protection derived from mixed-species groups, and particularly, by the high predation risk suffered by odd individuals.

Anastomosis Groups, Pathogenicity and Sensitivity to Fungicides of Rhizoctonia solani Isolates Collected on Potato Crops in France
TL;DR: Results show that, although AG 3 is the most common R. solani group on potato in France, AG 5 and AG 2-1 may be present, and isolates were highly sensitive to flutolanil, iprodione and pencycuron, except the AG 5 isolates, moderately sensitive to pencyCuron.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated how well data on 82 populations of 20 species of plants spanning the United States and Canada can be used to predict the forecast accuracy of ecological forecasts.
