TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Odour-mediated responses of phytophagous mites to conspecific and heterospecific competitors

TL;DR: Investigating the response of one species of herbivore to odours emanating from cucumber plants infested by conspecific or heterospecific herbivores found that spider mites prefer clean plants over thrips-infested plants, since thrips are not only competitors, but are also known as intraguild predators of spider mite.

Parental investment decision rules: a test in bluegill sunfish

TL;DR: It is found that male bluegill invest according to both brood size and past investment, consistent with recent theory that past parental investment devalues adult future reproductive value, and that animals should investment according to the value of their brood relative to that of their own expected future reproduction.

The leaf size – twig size spectrum and its relationship to other important spectra of variation among species

TL;DR: The authors investigated the allometry of this spectrum and its relationship to two important spectra of ecological variation between species, the seed mass-seed output spectrum and the specific leaf area-leaf lifespan spectrum.

Effects of fire and selective logging on the tree species composition of lowland dipterocarp forest in East Kalimantan, Indonesia

TL;DR: The studied Macaranga species formed an important part of both under- and over-storey in burnt forest 15 years after disturbance, while they were almost absent in the understorey and only moderately common in the overstorey of selectively logged forest.

Reference systems for coding spatial information in normal subjects and a deafferented patient

TL;DR: Results support the existence of an egocentric and an allocentric reference system capable of organizing extracorporeal space during arm movements directed toward visual targets.
