TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Large-scale candidate gene scan reveals the role of chemoreceptor genes in host plant specialization and speciation in the pea aphid.

TL;DR: This study offers the first indication that some chemoreceptor genes, often tightly linked together in the genome, could play a key role in local adaptation and reproductive isolation in the pea aphid and potentially other phytophagous insects.

Fight or flight? Antipredator behavior and the escalation of coyote encounters with deer

TL;DR: Observations of coyote packs hunting deer in winter are used to show that two ungulates of similar size and morphology, white-tailed deer and mule deer, use different antipredator strategies when encountered or attacked.

The Role of Arboreal Seed Dispersal Groups on the Seed Rain of a Lowland Tropical Forest1

TL;DR: It is unlikely that seed dispersal services provided by monkeys could be compensated for by frugivorous birds in the event of their extirpation from Afrotropical forests.

Accumulation of arsenic and zinc in the rhizosphere of wetland plants

TL;DR: The plant-induced processes in wetland soils may not only affect the availability of zine and arsenic to plantsmore but also may play an important role in the sink function of wetlands for metals and metalloids.

Site fidelity and homing behavior in juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta)

TL;DR: Caretta et al. as discussed by the authors investigated site fidelity and homing behavior in juvenile loggerheads and found that approximately half of the captured turtles were tagged and released near the capture sites, while the remaining displaced turtles were displaced 15-20 km and released (n=198).
