TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Food quality affects search strategy in the acellular slime mould, Physarum polycephalum

TL;DR: The results show that food quality affects exploitation and search behavior and that both behaviors influence foraging performance in different landscapes and suggest that increasing food quality results in a shift from extensive to intensive search.

Mesoscale variation in growth and early development of euphausia superba dana in the western Bransfield Strait region

TL;DR: It is proposed that the northern Gerlache Strait is a primary nursery area for E. superba, and that local circulation promotes high primary productivity and prolongs the residence time of larvae in a nearshore environment which is favorable to development and growth.

Antibacterial activity of traditional medicinal plants used by Haudenosaunee peoples of New

Frank M. Frey, +1 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that extracts from Haudenosaunee medicinal plants used to treat symptoms often caused by bacterial infection would show antibacterial properties in laboratory assays are tested, and that these extracts would be more effective against moderately virulentacteria than less virulent bacteria is supported.

Effects of ultraviolet B radiation on (not so) transparent exopolymer particles

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of visible and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on TEP degradation, photoinhibition, and TEP release by microorganisms were investigated, showing that UVB radiation enhanced TEP photolysis, possibly due to cell deaths or as a protective measure.

Thermal limits of wild and laboratory strains of two African malaria vector species, Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus

TL;DR: Limited plasticity is characteristic of the adults of these vector species relative to others examined to date, suggesting limited scope for within-generation change in thermal tolerance.
