TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Behavioral thermoregulation in the migratory locust: a therapy to overcome fungal infection

TL;DR: It is suggested that periodic, short bouts of thermoregulation, when performed from the onset of infection and for an extended period of time, are sufficient to provide a therapeutic effect to infected hosts.

Host-plant selection, diet diversity, and optimal foraging in a tropical leafcutting ant

TL;DR: A month-long study was conducted on the comparative foraging behavior of 20 colonies of the leafcutting ant, Atta cephalotes L. in Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica.

Pearson-Fisher Chi-Square Statistic Revisited

TL;DR: The aim of this paper was to present solutions to common problems when applying the Chi-square tests for testing goodness-of-fit, homogeneity and independence, and the Fisher exact test proved to be the "golden test" in analyzing the independence.

Sex-biased maternal expenditure in Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep

TL;DR: Examination of maternal energy expenditure in Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep found differential reproductive effort by ewes in this population appeared to entail a fitness cost involving reductions in both offspring and maternal survivorship.

Elevated temperature elicits greater effects than decreased pH on the development, feeding and metabolism of northern shrimp ( Pandalus borealis ) larvae

TL;DR: It is concluded that warming will likely exert a greater effect on shrimp larval development than ocean acidification manifesting itself as accelerated developmental rates with greater maintenance costs and decreased recruitment in terms of number and size.
