TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Comparison of mode estimation methods and application in molecular clock analysis

TL;DR: The half-range mode is a simple and fast method, and produced less bias overall in the authors' simulations, and is recommended as a general-purpose mode estimator and a bootstrap method for obtaining the standard error and 95% confidence interval of the mode is suggested.

Genetic differentiation between morphotypes of the marine sponge Suberites ficus (Demospongiae: Hadromerida)

TL;DR: The genetic differences, indicating reproductive isolation, are strong evidence for separate gene pools and, hence, that they are different species.

Grazing of two toxic Planktothrix species by Daphnia pulicaria: potential for bloom control and transfer of microcystins

TL;DR: Large quantities of MCYs were found in unstarved Daphnia previously exposed to Planktothrix, whereas quantities were significantly smaller in individuals starved for 24 h before preservation, indicating a potential for transfer of toxins in the food chain by Daphia, especially immediately after ingestion of toxic cyanobacteria.

Brood pheromone modulates honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) sucrose response thresholds

TL;DR: It is suggested that brood pheromone may act as a releaser of pollen foraging in older bees and a primer phersomone on the development of response thresholds and foraging ontogeny of young bees.

A novel hierarchical clustering algorithm for gene sequences.

TL;DR: A novel clustering algorithm, mBKM, based on a new sequence similarity measure, DMk, which is effective in classifying DNA sequences with similar biological characteristics and in discovering the underlying relationship among the sequences.
