TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Division of labour and worker size polymorphism in ant colonies: the impact of social and genetic factors

TL;DR: Results indicate that an increase in colony genetic diversity does not increase worker size polymorphism but might improve colony homeostasis, suggesting that the allocation of workers to tasks is modulated by multiple factors.

Predator size and phenology shape prey survival in temporary ponds

TL;DR: Examining how predator size dynamics in 40 temporary ponds over a 3-year period affected the survival of spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) larvae found that across communities, gape-limited predator richness, but not size, was correlated with habitat duration (pond permanence).

Ileal neobladder and local recurrence of bladder cancer: patterns of failure and impact on function in men.

TL;DR: Creating orthotopic diversion after cystectomy in patients with locally advanced bladder cancer, including macroscopically or microscopically positive lymph nodes, is safe and survival after local recurrence is limited despite multimodality therapy.

Intertidal community structure and oceanographic patterns around Santa Cruz Island, CA, USA

TL;DR: Results indicate that the confluence of cold- and warm-water masses around SCI may determine the contrasting patterns of intertidal community structure.

Nematicidal activity of essential oils and volatiles derived from Portuguese aromatic flora against the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

TL;DR: Five essential oils with nematicidal activity against PWN are reported for the first time and these include Chamaespartium tridentatum, Origanum vulgare, Satureja montana, Thymbra capitata, and Thymus caespititius.
