TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Adaptation to soil pollution by cadmium excretion in natural populations of Orchesella cincta (L.) (Collembola).

TL;DR: Population differentiation in Orchesella cincta (L.) (Collembola) populations, from various heavy metal contaminated sites, was studied by comparing cadmium excretion efficiency in first generation (F1) laboratory individuals, showing that both parameters were inversely related.

Electrofishing Effort Requirements for Assessing Species Richness and Biotic Integrity in Western Oregon Streams

TL;DR: The sampling effort required in wadeable western Oregon streams at base flow to estimate fish species richness, percent abundance, and biotic integrity when employing three persons and one backpack electrofisher was examined.

Spatial pattern of seedlings 1 year after fire in a Mediterranean pine forest.

TL;DR: It is suggested that variation in the heat of the fire, in the amount of ash between burned pine trees of different sizes, and in the distance from the burned canopy are responsible for the observed pattern of seedling distribution.

Effects of different levels of CO2 on photosynthesis and cell components of the red alga Porphyra leucosticta

TL;DR: In this paper, photosynthesis and cell composition of Porphyraleucosticta discs grown at low (< 00001% in air), current (control) and high (1% CO2 in air)inorganic carbon (Ci) concentrations were analyzed.

Facultative mutualism between an herbivorous crab and a coralline alga : advantages of eating noxious seaweeds

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the branching coralline alga Neogoniolithon strictum provides refuge to the herbivorous crab Mithrax sculptus at mean densities of 1 crab per 75 g of algal wet mass.
