TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Chemical induction of larval settlement and metamorphosis in the reef-building tube worm Phragmatopoma californica (Sabellariidae: Polychaeta)

TL;DR: Naturally-occurring lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis wer isolated and identified for Phragmatopoma californica, a gregarious tube worm from southern California, and the larval response was contact-dependent, highly specific, and concentration-dependent.

Tissue biochemical composition in relation to multiple spawning in wild and pond-reared Penaeus vannamei broodstock

TL;DR: Females with multiple spawnings may be adequate for production purposes, although more research is needed to address the possibility of specific metabolic indicators of a multiple spawning capacity without a decline in spawn quality.

Ecological constraints on amphibian metamorphosis: interactions of temperature and larval density with responses to changing food level.

TL;DR: The purpose of the present experiment was to examine the response of Couch's spadefoot toads to an abrupt change in food level, and to determine if the response depended on the level of two other factors, density and temperature, that also affect larval development.

The social network structure of a wild meerkat population: 2. Intragroup interactions

TL;DR: The centrality of each meerkat group in roving interactions networks was unaffected by the sex ratio of its members, indicating that male meerkats preferentially visit geographically close groups rather than those containing most females.

Song overproduction and selective attrition lead to song sharing in the field sparrow (Spizella pusilla)

TL;DR: Evidence supports the hypothesis that the actual acquisition of a song need not take place at the time and place as males occupy territories, and that males may acquire an abundance of song models earlier in life and then select songs from this repertoire that most closely resemble those of their neighbors.
