TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Phylogenetic relationships of artiodactyls and cetaceans as deduced from the comparison of cytochrome b and 12S rRNA mitochondrial sequences.

TL;DR: The combined analysis of the two genes suggests a monophyletic Cetacea +Artiodactyla clade, whereas PerissodactylA, Carnivora, and Tethytheria fall outside this clade.

Oviposition habitat selection in response to risk of predation in temporary pools: mode of detection and consistency across experimental venue

TL;DR: Oviposition avoidance and mode of detection of the predator have important implications for how to assess the true impact of predators and for the use of commercially produced kairomones for mosquito control.

The role of adult feeding in egg production and population dynamics of the checkerspot butterfly Euphydryas editha

TL;DR: On Jasper Ridge, where mortality is density-independent, nectar plays an important role increasing production of late egg masses during years of greater than normal rainfall when larvae from these masses are likely to reach diapause and the resulting large population increases are probably important in maintaining population sizes large enough to reduce the chances of extinction during dry years.

Comparative Sublethal Toxicity of Nine Pesticides on Olfactory Learning Performances of the Honeybee Apis mellifera

TL;DR: The study shows that the conditioned proboscis extension response assay can be used for estimating sublethal effects of pesticides on bees and comparisons of sensitivity as well as the estimation of NOECs, useful for regulatory purposes, are possible.
