TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

What Factors Affect the Size of Chimpanzee Parties in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda? Examination of Fruit Abundance and Number of Estrous Females

TL;DR: It is suggested that males tended to join parties with more females in estrous, irrespective of differences in fruit availability, as well as factors that might affect party size: fruit abundance, fruit distribution, and number of estrous females.

Parasitism rates and sex ratios of a parasitoid wasp: effects of herbivore and plant quality

TL;DR: It is suggested that wasps have the potential to control DBM populations through long-term numerical responses mediated by variable sex ratiosThrough manipulating plant nitrogen concentrations in field and laboratory experiments, parasitoid abundance strongly reflected DBM abundance and was related to total leaf N.

Fertilization in the sea: the chemical identity of an abalone sperm attractant

TL;DR: A natural gradient of L-tryptophan was necessary and sufficient to promote recruitment of sperm to the surface of eggs in red abalone, indicating that the sperm response was stereospecific.

How portulaca seedlings avoid their neighbours.

TL;DR: Portulaca oleracea L. seedlings do not develop in the direction of neighbours, even when these neighbours are small and distant, and Portulaca is able to use spectral composition and direction of light as clues for the probability of thedirection of future shade.

Intra- and inter-specific variation in canopy photosynthesis in a mixed deciduous forest

TL;DR: To identify sampling schemes appropriate for canopy tree studies with challenging logistics, the goals of this study were to measure light-saturated photosynthesis in co-occurring canopy tree species under field conditions, and to identify easy-to-measure trends in nitrogen content of leaves that may be used to predict species-specific light-Saturated Pmax rates.
