TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.
Abstract
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.

Virus‐induced differences in the response of oat plants to elevated carbon dioxide

TL;DR: CO2 enrichment may alter the epidemiology of BYDV by increasing the persistence of infected plants, but the two factors affected individual pools dissimilarly.

Sex and seasonal differences in aggression and steroid secretion in Lemur catta: Are socially dominant females hormonally ‘masculinized’?

TL;DR: Endocrine profiles and social interaction in the ringtailed lemur (Lemur catta), a species characterized by extreme masculinization of the female, are examined to search for a potential source of circulating androgen in adult females and an endocrine correlate of female dominance or its proxy, aggression.

The Lessonia nigrescens fishery in northern Chile: “how you harvest is more important than how much you harvest”

TL;DR: Results show that, despite the enormous harvesting pressure on Lessonia density and biomass, the associated macroinvertebrate richness has been maintained, due to normal plant growth and high recruitment all year round.

Alpha-tocopherol, an effective inhibitor of platelet adhesion.

TL;DR: In this paper, platelet adhesion was measured in an area of parallel flow lines and low shear rate under standardized conditions before and after dietary supplementation with vitamin E at doses of 200 and 400 IU/d.

Evaluation of surface water quality using an ecotoxicological approach: a case study of the Alqueva Reservoir (Portugal)

TL;DR: The species that was found to be the most sensitive was T. platyurus, and this organism detected a great number of toxic water samples in rainy seasons, and the surface water toxicity was assessed using acute and chronic bioassays.
