TLDR
The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required.Abstract:
This text develops the science of biometry from an elementary introduction up to the advanced methods necessary for biological research and for an understanding of the published literature. This text is aimed primarily at the academic biologist including general zoologists botanists microbiologists geneticists and physiologists in universities research institutes and museums. This book while furnishing ample directions for the analysis of experimental works also stresses the descriptive and analytical statistical study of biological phenomena. It is intended both as a text to accompany a lecture course and as a complete course for self-study. The book aims to instill in students an ability to think through biological research problems in such a way as to grasp the essentials of the experimental or analytical setup to know which types of statistical tests to apply in a given case and to carry out the computations required. Chapters cover biological data data handling descriptive statistics probability estimation and hupothesis testing analysis of variance linear regression correlation multiple and curvilinear regression analysis of frequencies and miscellaneous methods.read more

High frequency of gonadal neoplasia in a hard clam (Mercenaria spp.) hybrid zone
TL;DR: The excessive susceptibility of hybrid genotypes to gonadal neoplasia results in reduced hybrid fitness and constitutes an unambiguous example of a cellular disease that acts as a barrier to gene flow between species.

Concerted evolution in the ribosomal RNA cistron

TL;DR: Evidence presented provides concrete support for homogenization in the rRNA gene clusters found in this fungus and that the most reasonable explanation for this process is unequal crossing over.

Ectoparasitism as a possible cost of social life: a comparative analysis using Australian passerines (Passeriformes)
TL;DR: The hypothesis that cooperative breeding entails a cost in terms of transmission of ectoparasites was tested by a comparative analysis among sympatric Australian passerines, and the general trend found using the allometry method and outgroup analysis indicates that contagious ectoprasites are not more common on cooperatively breeding than on non-cooperatively breeding hosts.

Isolated trees and forest patches: patterns in canopy arthropod abundance and diversity in Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine).
TL;DR: Pyrethroid knockdown sampling of canopy arthropods in Pinus sylvestris in a British heathland matrix revealed larger forest patches supported greater populations of certain arthropod specialists than small patches, and that individual trees support a qualitatively different fauna with a stronger heathlands influence.

CO2-induced growth enhancements of co-occurring tree species decline at different rates.
TL;DR: It is suggested that CO2-induced enhancements in forest productivity may not be sustained for long periods of time, and species' differential growth responses to elevated CO2 may indirectly influence forest productivity via long-term species compositional changes in forests.
