TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the application, development, and practical considerations of fermentations in chemically defined media in an industrial environment and present a review of the application and process economics of such media.
Abstract
The use of chemically defined media is gaining popularity in some commercial fermentations, particularly for the preparation of biological products. Although these media are still not frequently developed for industrial processes, they do exhibit favorable characteristics at large scale that are not observed with traditional complex media. This review focuses on the application, development, and practical considerations, especially process economics, of fermentations in chemically defined media in an industrial environment.

Strategies of Mass Cultivation of Microbes: Sebacinales

TL;DR: The order Sebacinales placed at the base of Basidiomycetes exhibits fairly large diversity of mutualistic fungi and one of the extensively known members is Piriformospora indica, which is an AM-like mycorrhizal fungus.

Heterologous Lignan Production in Stirred-Tank Reactors—Metabolomics-Assisted Bioprocess Development for an In Vivo Enzyme Cascade

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the biotransformation of coniferyl alcohol to secoisolariciresinol with recombinant Escherichia coli in a stirred-tank reactor (STR).

Effects of environmental variations in Escherichia coli fermentations

TL;DR: In this article, the metabolic and gene expression level response of Escherichia coli bacterium for variating conditions in the bioreactor was studied by shift experiments and the effect of oscillating oxygen and glucose concentrations, typical for industrial scale processes, was studied with a scale-down model.

ENGINEERING THE METABOLISM OF Escherichia coli FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF OXIDIZED PRODUCTS: ACETATE AND PYRUVATE PRODUCTION

TL;DR: A novel approach that combines attributes of fermentative metabolism and oxidative metabolism into a single biocatalyst for production of oxidized chemicals, Escherichia coli was genetically engineered for acetate and pyruvate production.

Sequential Application of Simplex Designs in Optimisation and Evolutionary Operation

TL;DR: A technique for empirical optimisation is presented in which a sequence of experimental designs each in the form of a regular or irregular simplex is used, each simplex having all vertices but one in common with the preceding simplex, and being completed by one new point.

Growth characteristics of group A streptococci in a new chemically defined medium.

TL;DR: A new chemically defined medium for the growth of group A streptococci has been formulated and the production of virulence factors and extracellular enzymes during growth in this new medium was comparable to that in complex media.
