Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Present Wave Climate in the Bay of Biscay: Spatiotemporal Variability and Trends from 1958 to 2001

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated wave climate multi-decadal trends and inter-annual variability in the Bay of Biscay during the past decades (1958-2001).

Winter precipitation variability and large-scale circulation patterns in Romania

TL;DR: In this paper, the spatial and temporal variability of winter precipitation and its links to the large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns in Romania are examined and the data set is composed of observed rainfall at 30 meteorological stations during the 1961-1996 period.

Multi-century variability in the Pacific North American circulation pattern reconstructed from tree rings

TL;DR: In this article, a reconstruction of the winter Pacific North American (PNA) pattern based on three winter climate sensitive tree ring records from the western USA is presented, showing that the reorganization of the PNA pattern towards a positive mode is strongest when ENSO and PDO are in phase.

Impacts of Large-Scale Circulation Variability on Low Streamflows over Canada: A Review

TL;DR: In this article, the impacts of large-scale circulation patterns on streamflow variability (including low flows) over Canada are reviewed. But, the results from the various studies reveal that streamflow responses are generally consistent with those observed for large scale climate.

NAO and winter temperature variability in southern Europe

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the relationship between the NAO and the temperatures in southern Europe, using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data to study the synoptic situations associated with different phases and intensities of NAO as well as with different temperature anomalies.
