Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Genesis, Pathways, and Terminations of Intense Global Water Vapor Transport in Association with Large-Scale Climate Patterns

TL;DR: Sellars et al. as discussed by the authors applied the CONNected objECT (CONNECT) algorithm to global Integrated Water Vapor Transport data from the NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications -Version 2 reanalysis product for the period of 1980 to 2016.

On the Drivers and Predictability of Seasonal-to-Interannual Variations in Regional Sea Level

TL;DR: In this article, observations and eddy-permitting ocean model simulations are used to evaluate the drivers of sea level variability associated with 15 modes of climate variability covering the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans.

Portuguese Man-of-War (Physalia physalis) in the Mediterranean: A permanent invasion or a casual appearance?

TL;DR: It is concluded that the summer 2010 P. Physalis swarm was the result of an unusual combination of meteorological and oceanographic conditions during the previous winter and not a permanent invasion favoured by climatic changes.

Quasi-stationary waves and their impact on European weather and extreme events

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify and characterise large-scale, quasi-stationary atmospheric waves (QSWs) associated with weather extremes such as the European heatwave in 2003.

Interdecadal Relationships between the Asian–Pacific Oscillation and Summer Climate Anomalies over Asia, North Pacific, and North America during a Recent 100 Years

TL;DR: This article examined the relationship between the Asian-Pacific Oscillation (APO) and climate anomalies over Asia, the North Pacific, and North America on an interdecadal time scale.
