Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Serial clustering of intense European storms

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated how the clustering of wintertime extra-tropical cyclones depends on the vorticity intensity of the cyclones, and the sampling time period over which cyclone transits are counted.

Trends in rainfall regime over Israel, 1975–2010, and their relationship to large-scale variability

TL;DR: In this article, a simple multiple stepwise regression model applied for the inter-annual rainfall variations indicates that the occurrence of Cyprus lows is the dominant factor and the Mediterranean oscillation index, MOI2, is also a significant factor.

Observed winter cyclone tracks in the northern hemisphere in re-analysed ECMWF data

TL;DR: In this article, the cyclone activity in the northern-hemisphere winter (DJF) is investigated in 1979-97 European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts re-analyses.

Spatial analysis of mean temperature trends in Spain over the period 1961-2006

TL;DR: The spatial distribution of recent mean temperature trends over Spain during the period 1961-2006 at monthly, seasonal and annual time scale is carried out in this paper by applying various statistical tools to data from 473 weather stations.

Strength and spatial patterns of the Holocene wintertime westerlies in the NE Atlantic region

TL;DR: In this paper, the dominant position of the westerlies during the Holocene by comparing records of winter precipitation along a 2000-km south-north coastal transect in Norway was examined.
