Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Global climate change and variability and its influence on Alpine climate — concepts and observations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of global to continental scale synoptic structures and processes on the regional climate of the Alps and found that only a minor correlation can be observed between global climate variability and Alpine climate.

Three-Ocean Interactions and Climate Variability: A Review

Chunzai Wang
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the influence of ocean-atmosphere coupling among the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans through ocean coupling and showed that the Pacific Ocean is home to ENSO which affects other oceans through atmospheric bridges and the oceanic Indonesian throughflow (ITF).

Shamals and climate variability in the Northern Arabian/Persian Gulf from 1973 to 2012

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented key results from analysis of surface meteorological observations collected in the Northern Arabian/Persian Gulf (N Gulf; Kuwait, Bahrain, and NE Saudi Arabia), which spans a 40-year period (1973-2012).

Tree-ring indicators of German summer drought over the last millennium

TL;DR: This article presented 953 living and historical oak (Quercus sp) ring width samples from Central Germany (51−52 ) and showed that the variability in the hydrological cycle has and will impact terrestrial ecosystems, agricultural productivity, socioeconomic conditions, and public health on various time-scales.

Intercomparison of statistical and dynamical downscaling models under the EURO- and MED-CORDEX initiative framework: present climate evaluations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted an intercomparison exercise under the EURO- and MED-CORDEX initiative hindcast framework, comparing six statistical downscaling models (SDMs) and five regional climate models (RCMs) in terms of precipitation outputs.
