Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

The continuum and dynamics of Northern Hemisphere teleconnection patterns

TL;DR: In this article, a set of nonorthogonal basis functions that span the continuum of teleconnection patterns is derived, which correspond to well-known patterns such as the Pacific-North American teleconnection and North Atlantic Oscillation.

TL;DR: In this paper, principal component analysis is applied to the cyclone density over the North Atlantic in winter analyzed with an objective cyclone identification and tracking algorithm by using the 6-h National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis data from 1958 to 1998.

Cluster Analysis of North Atlantic-European Circulation Types and Links with Tropical Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures

TL;DR: In this article, a clustering algorithm incorporating a simulated annealing methodology is employed to improve on solutions found by the conventional k-means technique, which is applied to daily mean sea level pressure (MSLP) fields to derive a set of circulation types.

Characteristics of the Beaufort Sea High

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the characteristics of the Arctic Ocean's Beaufort Sea high using fields from the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis and found that the Beaufort sea high appears as a closed anticyclone in the long-term annual mean sea level pressure field and in spring.

Interannual teleconnections between the summer North Atlantic Oscillation and the East Asian summer monsoon

TL;DR: In this article, a study of the relationship between July-August mean climate over China, which is strongly linked to the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), and the summer (JA) North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO) was presented.
