Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

U.S. Diurnal Temperature Range Variability and Regional Causal Mechanisms, 1901–2002

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated long-term (1901-2002) diurnal temperature range (DTR) data to examine their spatial and temporal variability across the United States; the early century origin of the DTR declines; and the relative regional contributions to DTR variability among cloud cover, precipitation, soil moisture, and atmosphere/ocean teleconnections.

Late Holocene Changes in Precipitation and Hydrography Recorded in Marine Sediments from the Northeastern Caribbean Sea

TL;DR: In this paper, a record of climate variability spanning the last 2000 years obtained from sediment cores retrieved south and west of Puerto Rico in the northeastern Caribbean Sea was presented, including lithological and mineral magnetic parameters as well as planktonic foraminifer data.

North Atlantic influence on 19th–20th century rainfall in the Dead Sea watershed, teleconnections with the Sahel, and implication for Holocene climate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study the long-term hydroclimatic variability of the central Levant region, situated in the eastern boundary of the Basin, as reveled by instrumental observations and the Holocene record of Dead Sea level variations.

Climatic control of intra-annual wood density fluctuations of Pinus pinaster in NW Spain

TL;DR: In this article, the occurrence and climatic significance of replicated intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) in ten monospecific stands in NW Spain was analyzed. But their occurrence was geographically heterogeneous, with two groups of stands being defined by their distances to the shoreline.

How are large western hemisphere warm pools formed

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that large warm pools result from an anomalous divergent cir- culation forced by sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Pacific, the so-called atmospheric bridge.
