Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Factors controlling long-term changes of the eutrophicated ecosystem of Pärnu Bay, Gulf of Riga

TL;DR: The results indicated that atmospheric processes in the northern Atlantic explain a large part of the interannual variation of the local phytoplankton stock, trophic interactions control the development of pelagic communities at higher troPHic levels, and the introduction of an effective intermediate predator has repercussions for the whole pelagic food web in Parnu Bay.

The boreal spring variability of the Intra-Americas low-level jet and its relation with precipitation and tornadoes in the eastern United States

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the boreal spring variability of the IAS low-level jet (IA-LLJ) and its relation with precipitation and tornadic activity in the region of the lower Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio River basins (MORB).

A Stochastic Model for the Spatial Structure of Annular Patterns of Variability and the North Atlantic Oscillation

TL;DR: In this article, the meridional dipole pattern is explained as a natural consequence of the conservation of zonal momentum and mass by fluid motions, and it is shown that a local meridial dipole structure may become zonally elongated in EOF analysis.

Winter-to-spring temperature dynamics in Turkey derived from tree rings since AD 1125

TL;DR: In this article, a statistically robust, precisely dated and annually resolved chronology back to AD 1125 was developed for the tree species Juniperus excelsa in the eastern Mediterranean in general and in Turkey in particular.

Summertime precipitation variability over Europe and its links to atmospheric dynamics and evaporation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated interannual summer precipitation variability over Europe and its links to regional atmospheric circulation and evaporation, finding that the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of European precipitation, explaining 17.2%-22.8% of its total variance, is stable during the summer season and is associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation.
