Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns
TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.Abstract:
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...read more

Mediterranean summer air temperature variability and its connection to the large-scale atmospheric circulation and SSTs
TL;DR: In this article, the interannual and decadal variability of summer (June to September) air temperature over the Mediterranean area is analyzed for the period 1950 to 1999, and the combined influence of the largescale atmospheric circulation at different levels and thermic predictors (thickness patterns and Mediterranean SSTs) on station temperature data is assessed by means of optimal objective techniques.

Evaluation of the North Atlantic Oscillation as simulated by a coupled climate model
TL;DR: The realism of the Hadley Centre's coupled climate model (HadCM2) is evaluated in terms of its simulation of the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), a major natural mode of the Northern Hemisphere atmosphere that is currently the subject of considerable scientific interest as mentioned in this paper.

The Atmospheric Circulation and Sea Surface Temperature in the North Atlantic Area in Winter: Their Interaction and Relevance for Iberian Precipitation
TL;DR: In this article, the ocean surface-atmosphere relationships in the North Atlantic area in northern winter are empirically examined by canonical correlation analysis (CCA) from two different points of view, in terms of monthly mean sea level pressure (SLP) and monthly standard deviation of SLP (αSLP), and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies.

TL;DR: It is shown that El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a main driver of the interannual variability in salinity and plankton biomass during winter and spring and is closely interlinked with ENSO-induced changes in Salinity, plankon biomass, and coastal circulation across the northern GoM.

African dust outbreaks over the Mediterranean Basin during 2001–2011: PM 10 concentrations, phenomenology and trends, and its relation with synoptic and mesoscale meteorology
TL;DR: In this article, a methodology for the estimation of the natural dust contributions on daily PM10 concentrations was applied to evaluate the impact of such mineral dust outbreaks on ambient concentrations of particulate matter, using PM10 data from regional and suburban background sites across the Mediterranean area.
