Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

The Influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on Rainfall Triggering of Landslides Near Lisbon

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on both the winter precipitation and the timing and magnitude of associated landslide events is assessed. And the authors show that the large inter-annual variability of winter precipitation is largely modulated by the NAO mode.

Historical drought patterns over Canada and their teleconnections with large-scale climate signals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive analysis of historical droughts over the whole of Canada, including the role of large-scale teleconnections, and investigate the trend, spatio-temporal patterns, periodicity, and wavelet coherence of drought events.

Recent enhanced high-summer North Atlantic Jet variability emerges from three-century context

TL;DR: It is found that northward NAJ anomalies have resulted in heatwaves and droughts in northwestern Europe and southward anomalies have promoted wildfires in southeastern Europe and an unprecedented increase in NAJ variance since the 1960s co-occurs with enhanced late twentieth century variance in the Central and North Pacific Basin.

Decadal Evolution of Ocean Thermal Anomalies in the North Atlantic: The Effects of Ekman, Overturning, and Horizontal Transport

TL;DR: In this article, a dynamical analysis based on historical data from 1965 to 2000 suggests that the sethermalanomalies are formed by ocean heat convergences, augmented by poorly known air-sea fluxes.

On the Level and Origin of Seasonal Forecast Skill in Northern Europe

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the level and origin of seasonal forecast skill of surface air temperature in northern Europe using canonical correlation analysis (CCA), which is a method designed to find correlated patterns between predictor and predictand fields.
