Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

North American weather‐type frequency and teleconnection indices

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the response of synoptic weather-type frequencies to different teleconnection phases, and found that the frequency of the transitional situation is also correlated with NAO phase, with differences as large as a factor of two across much of Canada and the northern USA.

Precipitation over Sardinia (Italy) during the 1946-1993 rainy seasons and associated large-scale climate variations

TL;DR: The interannual and decadal variability of seasonal precipitation (October through April) over Sardinia (Italy) is analyzed for the years 1940-1995 in this paper, where correlations between precipitation and large-scale variables (sea level pressures (SLP), 500 hPa geopotential heights (Z500) and sea surface temperatures (SST)) are calculated and analyzed.

Variability of the surface atmospheric circulation over Europe, 1774-1995

TL;DR: In this article, a long series of monthly surface pressure observations are analyzed from the 1770s to 1995, using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and circulation indices.

European summer temperature response to annually dated volcanic eruptions over the past nine centuries

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present new evidence on summer temperature cooling over Europe in years following volcanic eruptions, and evaluate the statistical significance of postvolcanic summer tempera- ture cooling in the context of natural climate variability over the past nine centuries.

An analysis of Australian seasonal rainfall anomalies: 1950–1987. I: Spatial patterns

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed analysis of the variability of Australian district rainfall on seasonal time-scales over the period 1950-1987 is described, where the major analysis tool is rotated principal component analysis (RPCA), used in both the S and T modes.
