Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

On the changing nature of the regional connection between the North Atlantic Oscillation and sea surface temperature

TL;DR: In this paper, the correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), in terms of the NAO index, and the N Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) is inferred from both reanalysis data from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) and the Kaplan Sea surface temperature data set.

Relationship of ENSO to snowfall and related cyclone activity in the contiguous United States

TL;DR: The relationship of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation to the contiguous U.S. snowfall was investigated using data from 3841 cooperative observer stations for the period 1951-1997 as mentioned in this paper.

Interannual variability of winter precipitation in the European Alps: relations with the North Atlantic Oscillation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used gridded precipitation data from the CRU TS 1.2 to study the interannual variability of winter alpine precipitation in Europe, and found that the Alps are the region with the highest variability in winter precipitation.

Structure and variability of the West Greenland Current in Summer derived from 6 repeat standard sections

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined six historical sections across the West Greenland Current and found significant variability is observed for the freshwater core of the coastal current on the shelf, with salinity varying by over 3 units between years.

Experimental Dynamical Seasonal Forecasts of Tropical Cyclone Activity at IRI

TL;DR: The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRIICS) has been issuing experimental seasonal tropical cyclone activity forecasts for several ocean basins since early 2003 as discussed by the authors, and the forecast performance is evaluated.
