Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

Which MJO Events Affect North American Temperatures

TL;DR: In this paper, a multivariate PNA (MVP) index was proposed to identify variations in the extratropical waveguide over the North Pacific and North America that might affect the response to the Madden-Julian oscillation.

Representing teleconnection patterns over Europe: A comparison of SOM and PCA methods

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Self Organizing Maps (SOM) was performed for the detection of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the North Sea-Caspian Pattern (NCP) teleconnection patterns.

Effects of specifying bottom boundary conditions in an ensemble of atmospheric GCM simulations

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of the prescribed boundary conditions on the simulated atmospheric circulation structure and variability was analyzed in an ensemble of six 47-year climate simulations with specified time-varying sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice extent.

The changing relationship between ENSO and its extratropical response patterns.

TL;DR: ENSO’s relationship with both the TNH and PNA is shown to be strongly influenced by the position of the Pacific jet stream, and the ENSO-TNH relationship is found to be linked to phase changes of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, andThe resulting changes in SST and jet speed.

Long-term analysis of snow-covered area in the Moroccan High-Atlas through remote sensing

TL;DR: This study shows how satellite remote sensing can be useful for the long-term observation of the intra- and inter-annual variability of snowpacks in rather inaccessible regions where the network of meteorological stations is deficient.
