Classification, seasonality and persistence of low-frequency atmospheric circulation patterns

TLDR
In this article, Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) was used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability.
Abstract
Orthogonally rotated principle component analysis (RPCA) of Northern Hemisphere 1-month mean 700 mb heights is used to identify and describe the seasonality and persistence of the major modes of interannual variability. The analysis is detailed and comprehensive, in that 1) a high resolution, approximately equal-area 358-point grid is used for the virtually maximum possible 35-year period of record, 2) a positive bias in the NMC data base in the early 1950s in the subtropics is largely eliminated for the first time, and 3) homogeneous, separate analyses of each month of the year are carried out, detailing the mouth-to-month changes in the dominant circulation patterns. Winter results are similar to those of other recent RPCA and teleconnection studies except that some less obvious patterns are identified and further detail of the better-known patterns is provided. Two north-south dipole patterns are found over the Pacific Ocean (West Pacific Oscillation and East Pacific pattern) and over the Atla...

An aggregate drought index: Assessing drought severity based on fluctuations in the hydrologic cycle and surface water storage

TL;DR: An aggregate drought index (ADI) has been developed, and evaluated within three diverse climate divisions in California as discussed by the authors, which comprehensively considers all physical forms of drought (meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural) through selection of variables that are related to each drought type Water stored in large surface water reservoirs was also included Hydroclimatic monthly data for each climate division underwent correlation-based principal component analysis (PCA).

Impact of Ural Blocking on Winter Warm Arctic–Cold Eurasian Anomalies. Part I: Blocking-Induced Amplification

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of Ural blocking on the warm Arctic-cold Eurasian (WACE) pattern associated with the winter (DJF) arctic sea ice loss during 1979-2013 is examined by dividing the arctic reduction region into two dominant subregions: the Barents and Kara Seas (BKS) and the North American high-latitude (NAH) region (Baffin and Hudson Bay, Davis Strait, and Labrador Sea).

Climatic changes in Estonia during the second half of the 20th century in relationship with changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of trends in circulation on climate changes in Estonia has been analyzed using the conditional Mann-Kendall test, which is compared with trends in the characteristics of large-scale atmospheric circulation: the NAO and AO indices, frequency of circulation, and the northern hemisphere teleconnection indices.

Tropical forcing of the recent rapid Arctic warming in northeastern Canada and Greenland

TL;DR: It is found that the most prominent annual mean surface and tropospheric warming in the Arctic since 1979 has occurred in northeastern Canada and Greenland, and it is shown that the recent warming in this region is strongly associated with a negative trend in the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Canadian Precipitation Patterns Associated with the Southern Oscillation

TL;DR: In this article, precipitation responses over Canada associated with the two extreme phases of the Southern Oscillation (SO), namely El Nino and La Nina, are identified using the best available precipitation data from 1911 to 1994.
