Recent findings related to the involvement of astrocytes and endothelial cells, including radial glial cells, in the induction of barrier properties during embryogenesis and adulthood are described.Abstract:
The Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) is a specialized vascular structure tightly regulating central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. Endothelial cells are the central component of the BBB and control of their barrier phenotype resides on astrocytes and pericytes. Interactions between these cells and the endothelium promote and maintain many of the physiological and metabolic characteristics that are unique to the BBB. In this review we describe recent findings related to the involvement of astroglial cells, including radial glial cells, in the induction of barrier properties during embryogenesis and adulthood. In addition, we describe changes that occur in astrocytes and endothelial cells during injury and inflammation with a particular emphasis on alterations of the BBB phenotype.read more

ZIKV Strains Differentially Affect Survival of Human Fetal Astrocytes versus Neurons and Traffic of ZIKV-Laden Endocytotic Compartments
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that ZIKV affects vesicle mobility in all but mosquito cells and astrocytes were more susceptible to ZikV infection than neurons, released more progeny virus and tolerated higher virus loads than neurons.

miR-285-Yki/Mask double-negative feedback loop mediates blood-brain barrier integrity in Drosophila.
Dong Li,Yanling Liu,Chunli Pei,Peng Zhang,Linqing Pan,Jing Xiao,Songshu Meng,Zengqiang Yuan,Xiaolin Bi +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown here that miR-285 is an upstream regulator of the Hippo pathway, which can directly target Yorkie (Yki) cofactor Multiple Ankyrin repeats Single KH domain (Mask) and form a double-negative feedback loop that regulates SPG growth and BBB integrity.
