Guideline for the laboratory diagnosis of functional iron deficiency.
TLDR
One form of FID, found in some subjects treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), has been the subject of numerous studies following the widespread use of these agents, especially in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Abstract:
Functional iron deficiency (FID) is a state in which there is insufficient iron incorporation into erythroid precursors in the face of apparently adequate body iron stores, as defined by the presence of stainable iron in the bone marrow together with a serum ferritin value within normal limits (Macdougall et al, 1989). In its broadest sense this definition encompasses the partial block in iron transport to the erythroid marrow seen in subjects with infectious, inflammatory and malignant diseases, and is a major component of the anaemia of chronic disease (ACD). One form of FID, found in some subjects treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), has been the subject of numerous studies following the widespread use of these agents, especially in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD).read more

Iron isotopic composition of blood serum in anemia of chronic kidney disease
Yulia Anoshkina,Marta Costas-Rodríguez,Marijn M. Speeckaert,Wim Van Biesen,Joris R. Delanghe,Frank Vanhaecke +5 more
TL;DR: The Fe isotopic composition can be useful for distinguishing these different types of anemias in CKD patients, i.e. ID anemia vs. erythropoietin-related anemia.

Serum hepcidin levels predict response to intravenous iron and darbepoetin in chemotherapy-associated anemia
TL;DR: Patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer frequently experience anemia, which may require red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, and the erythropoiesis-stimulating agents epoetin and darbepoet in reduce transfusion needs and increase hemoglobin levels in 40% to 70% of patients.

Iron Deficiency in COPD Associates with Increased Pulmonary Artery Pressure Estimated by Echocardiography.
Louis Lind Plesner,Mikkel Malby Schoos,Morten Dalsgaard,Jens P. Goetze,Erik Kjøller,Jørgen Vestbo,Kasper Iversen +6 more
TL;DR: Iron deficiency in non-anaemic COPD patients was associated with a modest increase in systolic pulmonary artery pressure and limitation of diffusion capacity and ferritin inversely correlated with TR Vmax in ID patients.

The management of anaemia and haematinic deficiencies in pregnancy and post‐partum
N. B. A. Roy,S. Pavord +1 more
TL;DR: A strategy for iron replacement in a population of anaemic pregnant women needs to be developed not only based on what is biologically and clinically most appropriate but also in the context of each organisation's delivery of care structure, taking into consideration aspects of cost effectiveness.

The effect of multistrain probiotic supplementation in two doses on iron metabolism in obese postmenopausal women: a randomized trial.
TL;DR: It is concluded that multistrain probiotic supplementation may influence iron metabolism in obese postmenopausal female patients.

Hepcidin Regulates Cellular Iron Efflux by Binding to Ferroportin and Inducing Its Internalization
Elizabeta Nemeth,Marie S. Tuttle,Julie Powelson,Michael B. Vaughn,Adriana Donovan,Diane M. Ward,Tomas Ganz,Jerry Kaplan +7 more
TL;DR: It is reported that hepcidin bound to ferroportin in tissue culture cells, leading to decreased export of cellular iron and the posttranslational regulation of ferroports by hePCidin may complete a homeostatic loop.
