Guideline for the laboratory diagnosis of functional iron deficiency.
TLDR
One form of FID, found in some subjects treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), has been the subject of numerous studies following the widespread use of these agents, especially in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Abstract:
Functional iron deficiency (FID) is a state in which there is insufficient iron incorporation into erythroid precursors in the face of apparently adequate body iron stores, as defined by the presence of stainable iron in the bone marrow together with a serum ferritin value within normal limits (Macdougall et al, 1989). In its broadest sense this definition encompasses the partial block in iron transport to the erythroid marrow seen in subjects with infectious, inflammatory and malignant diseases, and is a major component of the anaemia of chronic disease (ACD). One form of FID, found in some subjects treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), has been the subject of numerous studies following the widespread use of these agents, especially in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD).read more

Reference Values of Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Content and Their Relation With Other Indicators of Iron Status in Healthy Children.
Encarnación López-Ruzafa,María A Vázquez-López,Francisco Lendinez-Molinos,Juan Poveda-González,Rafael Galera-Martínez,Antonio Bonillo-Perales,Manuel Martín-González +6 more
TL;DR: Age, nutritional status, hematologic measurements, reticulocytes, transferrin saturation, and erythrocyte protoporphyrin accounted for 39% of CHr variability, but the influence of age on CHr (the values increased with age) and on the iron parameters justified the establishment of different reference ranges.

Intravenous iron: do we adequately understand the short- and long-term risks in clinical practice?
TL;DR: Understanding issues regarding the differences among iron products will enable more informed treatment decisions and knowledgeable use of these drugs, as well as potential but presently unproven risks of iron overload due to IV iron.

Increased Hepcidin Levels During a Period of High Training Load Do Not Alter Iron Status in Male Elite Junior Rowers
TL;DR: It is concluded that hepcidin is sensitive to rigorous changes in training load in junior world elite rowers without causing short-term alterations in functional iron homeostasis.

TL;DR: It is reported that hepcidin bound to ferroportin in tissue culture cells, leading to decreased export of cellular iron and the posttranslational regulation of ferroports by hePCidin may complete a homeostatic loop.
